I also read in the same document that there is a growing trend for parents to try and get a diagnosis
for their kids just so they are able to explain their bad behaviour!!

Some parents did this with a diagnosis of ADHD. I guess they are now doing it with ASDs.

I am sure when i first looked into this it was 1 in 150

Always thought th 1 in 150 is an asperger's statistic. The UK's NAS gives 1 in 100 for all ASD.

Yes, I see. It's that way here too, with some states having figures of 1/80 and some 1/250. Last saw the mean here as 1/110; very similar to EU.

That works out about right. If the male:female ratio is 3:1, and and average of 1% of people have ASD, then if 4/400 people are ASD, with 3 of those 4 being male, that would come to 1/75 for males.

I see what you are saying,  but i think some of them include 
aspergers, as in the figure includes all disorders on the spectrum, 
and some are ASD only?  
i know that many health authorities are unable to disclose stats -
as they don't bother to record them!  
which is a pretty piss poor state of affairs.

i guess the reason for some area's with higher  instances are they 
must be including all those on the spectrum.

I found a reference somewhere that indicated the 'Amish' community has 
one of the lowest diagnosis -  i  don't want to stereotype a group of people
i know very little about,  but are they unlikely to report possible cases?   
I would have thought though, that they use a limited gene pool,  
perhaps that is the reason?

It's hard to say. Some say ASD diagnosis is on the rise because awareness is on the rise; some say it's a trend and over diagnosed. It's also hard to completely rule out environmental factors which may or may not effect stats for various locations.

Amish views on medicine in general vary, and don't know at all their views on mental health. Have heard the scientologists rank low for ASD.

Maybe they have a life that "simple", that it isn't that mindboggling to get the social rules enough to go unnoticed.

Also, in small communities you can't ostracise all. Everyone has a function to make it work, spazz or not, there are creative niches to be filled.

Can be very suffocating, a small community, but there are good things to it too.

For someone with the need to have the right to doubt everything, living in an Amish community would not work of course. They would leave, diagnosed or not. And, because they left, they would not raise the percentage of diagnosed ASDs.
