Sulfides are like that in many cases.
And indeed, chalcogen-based compounds other than those incorporating only that gas we have evolved to respire, tend to smell worse as one gets down the periodic table. (for ex. H2O-almost no smell, very, very faint, inoffensive; H2S, toxicity aside, rotting eggs, H2Se-more toxic still, extremely, gutwrenchingly abysmal stench)
No idea what hydrogen telluride smells of, never personally encountered any, but it will be even more lethally toxic than hydrogen selenide and doubtless smell even fouller.
