My mum has been feeding a female magpie with one eye every day for a while now. Other birds pick on this magpie and I think it finds food hard to get.

Think quite a few Swedish 'nøtteskriken' migrate towards here (and more southwards). Plus ja (or blah), they, like magpies also, are quite intelligent birds. Jays also, did you know, are responsible for the spreading of oak trees in Europe. This, cos they collect the acorn (sometimes more than 500 of them) and store them on numerous locations in Autumn (/late Summer.. to have food in Winter).. and remember where they stored the nuts even months later. Same thing with chestnuts, I think.

Oh, 'the spreading'? Well, they also forget some of the locations where they put the nuts and then the following Spring a new little tree emerges.

And magpies? Well, I like birds in general and due to me being a bit of birdlurver I don't like those other bird's egg-stealing or young bird's life-taking 'bastards'. They are all over the place here and make smaller birds shit their pants.. well, in springtime they do.

Lots of storm drains seem to be clogged leading to tons of big puddles in the streets today

There are a LOT of jays around this year.

Due to their other bird's nest looting trait I do not really like a few members, like e.g. the magpie, of the Corvidae (crow) family but I tend to like (Euroasian) jays.

Where I live, a jay means this:

They're one of my favourite birds. Along with the cardinals:

The males look so badass.

It's called schraouwakster, in the dialect I'm raised in. Where I live, I think they call it holtakster. I was amazed as a kid, that, an animal with such a local name could have a name referring to Belgium in Dutch. "Vlaamse Gaai" (Flemish Jay).

Your mum is very kind, hope the magpie will be all right.  :)

We've deliberately designed it like that, to keep the Swedish-speaking population small. :P
