Cutting back on food.
« on: March 31, 2011, 05:30:31 PM »
I'm starting to get serious about spending less on food. I can't afford to spend 200+ dollars a month on groceries anymore because I have dried up my savings account. I know the US dollar is getting weak, as the giant corporations are continuing to gouge up the prices while the middle class is slowing fading away and as the income of the poor is not really improving, but Jesus Christ! I get 100 dollars in food stamps every month, I don't want to go beyond that. I want some cheap, but good, and nutritious food.

Are you picking up the weekly supermarket flyers with all the bargains listed? Those help a lot! You can stock up on favorite items cheaply
if you time it right. Also, if you don't already have a discount card from your supermarket, get one, those help too.   :viking:

Also, how's the tap water where you live? If it tastes OK, keep containers of it in the fridge, water is way cheaper than juice or soda.

I can get my weekly shopping bill down to $80 a week for 4 people so it is possible. But I know it's easier for me because I have a discount grocery store close to my house. Is there something like that close to you?

*Also look for coupons. Lots of online ones that you can either print out yourself or they're mail them to you for free.
*Get the flyers and shop on savings. I make all my meals around what's on sale that week.
*If you make one big meal, freeze the leftovers
*Canned soups go a long way on a budget
*Buy no name stuff on things if you can. I do that for all my canned veggies. Tastes the same as Green Giant.

I can't stand living on water alone, even though I have a Brita pitcher. And besides, soda is actually one of the cheapest things on my list, being at least 60-70 cents per 2 liters.

Have you thought about growing your own food? Having a small garden isn't that much work, and there are things you can grow indoors if need be.

I tried to grow weed once.

We were getting ready to separate the males and females. And what were clearly the males he insisted they were female. ( the buds form AFTER the seed pods, so the males look female at  first)

He argued with me, and I let him do what he wanted

So, we ended up with 15 male plants. Idiot.

I used to grow - had a nice hydroponic system set up.  The females are easy to tell from the males, so someone deserved a smack for the wasted effort.   >:(

yeah, he was an idiot in general.

I grew a plant at work one time :D I had it set up behind the desk. Just one plant. It was like a bonsai tree.

I loved that job. All I was supposed to do was sit there watching the trucks park. So, it was mostly playstation and porno. not bad for 11$ an hour.
