Automated phone calls
« on: January 25, 2011, 10:02:46 AM »
Automated phone call suck.  My town and most of the one around here have reverse 911 and automated phone systems that send out alerts while all this sounded good when they proposed it it has turn into a big head ache.  The begin about 530am with the school closing or delays due to weather not just one call mind you we get about four during the morning hours.  Then they start with the clubs and after school closing around 11am.  then they keep coming sometime the same one three times  during the day.  They use it for everything from PTA meetings to fundraiser reminders. The police use it to tell people if they don't shovel their walks there will be a fine.  Fuck I think I have gotten eight call so far today alone :zombiefuck:  All the more reason I let the machine pick up.  Are they like this everywhere they introduce them?

Yikes, I have gotten some unwanted calls (usually computer-generated calls from telemarketers),
but now that I have my cell phone, I just leave the volume off on my landline...problem solved!   :2thumbsup:

:zombiefuck: Thankfully their's nothing like that around here, I'd do away with the phone.

I get email alerts for the school closings/delays.

There's no way to opt out of the service?

That is fucked. The only ones I have gotten are from companies trying to sell me something. Every time I get one I report it to the Do Not Call Registry.

No  When it was conceived  they said it would be for emergency use only but over the last year it turned into this.  They called on cell phones to for awhile but at least that has stopped

I think that we have gotten one reverse 911 call which was an Amber Alert, IIRC, and I know some people who got reverse 911 calls to get out when there was a fire nearby, but I have to look online or at television to see if the schools have closed.  If we get a ticket from the snow police, they mail it to us and we have one day to shovel our sidewalk after that.  As far as I know, the city has never fined anyone.

I have never heard of phone calls being done like that before but understand what they are and can imagine it being a nuisance.

Snow police! I wonder if they patrol in areas of Australia where it snows.

Just got an automated phone call from the school today telling me they are dismissing early because of the snow.

First time they ever did that.  :zombiefuck:

Normally you either hear it on the news or from a neighbor.

Progress has arrived even here I guess. :hide:

At least when we were kids, we heard the announcements on the radio in the morning. Why don't they do it that way?   :dunno:
