GLUE?????????????
« on: December 02, 2010, 09:07:32 PM »
Has anyone heard of this?   Weird.

In order to make a polystyrene or styrofoam glue at home you will need some items to get the job done properly. So, first gather the following:

Two or Three Styrofoam (polystyrene) food containers
Limonene/Orange Oil *can be purchased at Citrus Depot
Large Metal Pot
Clean Jar or Jars with lids
Once you have your items together, the first thing you'll want to do is get set up in a well ventilated area or go outside. The Limonene has a powerful orange scent and the polystyrene can be odorous while breaking down.

Tear up or cut your polystyrene into small pieces
Place your polystyrene into the metal pot
Start off with pouring 4oz of Limonene onto the polystyrene
The polystyrene will then break down into a thin liquid form. Take the resulting liquid, which will amount to about 9oz and pour into a jar. Label it well as "Glue" before you put it away, so you and your household will know what it is later.

Chose to use your glue wisely, as it can also act as a type of sealant. Once you use it, just like some of the better super glues it is there to stay and is very hard to get off.

I had heard about dissolving polystyrene in acetone, makes sense that it would get glue-like.

I have polystyrene and orange oil in the house, so I might give it a try later.  Mum has a drawer full of essential oils that I've given her, and one of them, I think it was clove oil, leaked into a small plastic dish a while back and turned it into sticky goo.  I don't know what type of plastic it was.

I'm always interested in experimenting with glues and sealants to find things that work well with difficult materials like my butyl rubber and polypropylene pond liners, but I won't try the polystyrene/orange oil glue near anything that's living; orange oil is quite harmful to some creatures, and I've found that placing a piece of orange rind in a jar with fruit flies quickly results in dead fruit flies.

I remember having goldfish as a child.  They birthed baby fishies.  Thoughtful me pulled some parsley leaves and put it in the aquarium to provide some shelter for the babies.  All the fish were belly up within a few hours.  Who knew parsley is toxic to goldfish?

Also my mom was cleaning the goldfish bowl (separate set of fish) and the fish slipped out of  her hand onto the top of a can of Comet cleanser.  The fish turned white and died within minutes.

You're so resourceful, you and Queen Victoria too. I'm way too lazy to make my own glue!

One of my girls had an obsession of making 'plastic' as a two year old. Letting puddles of all kinds of glue dry into sheets of material. After a while she started decorating it with glitter and such too. Very cute. She did it for a couple of years.

I remember glue sticks! I had them when I was a child, for craft projects.   :orly:

I use them for all kinds of things.  Tonight, I used them to seal around the edges of an acrylic beach that I made for one of my tanks.

I'm talking about vivariums and aquariums; I've made partitions in several of my vivariums from pieces of acrylic sheet so that I can have water on one side and dry land on the other.  The latest attempt was a partition that was angled to give a gentle slope into the water, to make it easier for fire salamanders to get in and out of the water.  Sadly, the experiment with hot melt glue didn't pay off; it failed to bond with the glass, although it bonded very strongly with the acrylic, so I'll have to try again with a silicone sealant.
