Savant Style.
« on: October 18, 2010, 02:01:02 PM »
I always find it fascinating when I read letters from my shrinks. You get the "real picture" when they write reports for colleagues or other important bodies :green:

In my report from my psych for when I apply for public housing, he made an interesting observation, as follows:

".........."savant" style presentations. Ms (loupgarou ) exhibits particular skills in the domain of language, inter alia."

The report on the whole was extremely well written and precise. I have only been with my AS psych for about 5 months and this is the first report I have read from him. I am mucho impressed by his writing style. Very scientific and to the point AND with the use of Latin. LOVE Latin. :zoinks:

Anyway, I digress. I undertand the meaning of "savant" but not really in the context of experience as such. In other words, I have never reflected upon my particular skills and thought them "savant like", although when I read the meaning, I certainly identified with it. Does anyone else have a particular history with this or had it pointed out to them by psychs, docs, or otherwise, as children or adults? How did you "deal" with it, and did you find a way to cope with life and still use your savant skills?

Another point of difference if there is any, and I am open to constructive argument, is the terming of "savant like" and "savantism", but I am not sure if there is a point of contention. I mean, you are autistic or you are not. You cannot have "traits" of autism, even if that is the language sometimes used. The neurological difference is there, or it isn't. That is my understanding.

Just interested in your thoughts.

Oh, how is your Dad?

I never read anything they wrote about me.  I have strong abilities in some things which they have commented on but I have not read their notes.

My dad is back to work now He is 77 and still works in sales:2thumbsup:

I am glad about your dad :green:. yeh, my 63 year old mum still works full time and goes to the gym 6 days a week. she is a freaking machine.

Have you ever thought to ask for your notes? Are you interested? Maybe it was because I was dx as an adult that I am so fascinated. Got to know everything :duh: ::)

I tried to come off as having sekrit savant powers, but in reality I was just an unbearbly arrogant cunt that had nothing to offer but bullshit and crap. The latter part still persists somewhat, and the former never happened. :zoinks:

I don't have any special talent or anything. I am pretty average. I get average grades at uni.

I remember stupid stuff that surprises people sometimes, though.

My diagnotic report is pretty interesting, but it says nothing about savant qualities. My favorite comment in it is:

"Her affect is odd and stilted, almost schizoid-like."  :headbang:

I don't think you are schizoid, you seem to care about people. But that is only my opinion.

Thank you. Oddly, I have seen something of myself in descriptions of schizoid people.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schizoid_personality_disorder, especially the section titled "The 'secret schizoid'."

I see it in me, too. The psych who diagnosed me with ADHD also said I was schizoid and avoidant.

From what I learnt about it earlier this year, schizoid PD is a diagnosis some autistic people get, especially adults. They are closely related in some ways.

I just read about the secret schizoid and yeah, you could be right. I feel like this sometimes at uni when I am part of a class discussion. People get emotionally involved and it strikes me as strange.

CBC, one of my many hundreds of errant diagnosis in the past was schizoaffective disorder.

I mean, I can see the resemblance and I have certainly been hospitalised with a "psychotic presentation", but I now know that my presentation was representative of complete meltdown followed by complete shutdown. Despite the fact that would ramble incoherently and rock away like my life depended on it, there were stark inconsistencies. That is probably why I was diagnosed with about 8 mental illnesses before I was dx with AS. PTSD is still the only thing that stands along with the AS now.

Silly diagnostic peoples!

Yeah, the psych who diagnosed me considered schizoid PD and social anxiety before settling on Asperger's,
and he said it took him longer to decide than it usually does; he kept my report for weeks longer than usual.

Maybe he was asking other psychs' opinions.
