Yes, didn't want to sound as if diagnosing anything using technical terms.

I don't even know how one would get tested for that.

I sometimes said my hearing is delayed, thought it would be seen as rubbish, but apparently my nephew now got the verdict delayed hearing.

Central Auditory Processing Disorder.

That's the DX but very few people know what that means so I explain it most of the time.
I also get some cross over with my vision when the sounds are very loud and sharp, it's like getting a spot light in my eyes.  Loud sound also have a tendency to make me angry also  and I keep ear plugs in the van for noisy places

I have an excellent sense of hearing but poor filtering capabilities. Little tiny noises can freak me out. My wife still has difficulty accepting that I will hear, and be bothered about, some noises when she won't even notice them.

Too much input (not necessary auditory) makes noise go into a buzz, and I stop hearing completely, apart from that buzz. It also puts massive amounts of pressure on my head, from the sides. Better leave me alone, when that happens.

Has anyone else experienced, when overloaded with sensory input, a partial shut down, or perhaps, overemphasis on certain senses?

Recently happened while coming home from the city center after doing my shopping, and it became too much to keep my focus on visual input whilst the heavy traffic contributed to a lot of random background noise.

Ended up having to find my way home partly visually, but mainly using hearing and sense of smell (being familiar with the local plant life, and the weather being somewhat humid and damp, I could tell where I was to a pretty decent degree)
Beyond the pale. Way, way beyond the pale.

Not like that. I have overloaded to the point where my brain shuts off (hard to describe it better)...very confused, upset, unable to vocalize it.

Thankfully I've learned not to let it progress to that point, and will bail anyway I have to if the situation becomes absolutely too much. Now the worst that happens is that it just sucks the life out of me for awhile.

Sort of reverse. Brain sometimes shuts down things which would otherwise overwhelm me. It's preemptive, not a shut down after the fact.

Mine does not need a trigger.
