30 minute storm
« on: June 24, 2010, 02:51:30 PM »
We had some of the craziest weather blow through earlier today.  It went from cloudy to tornado warning to possible tornado to sunny in just over 30 minutes.  In a large town west of us they had a possible tornado with building collapses,  windows and roofs blown off, trucks flipped on the high way and airplane flipped at the airport.  Also a local radio station is now off the air.  Where was I at the dump  The wind were incredible and we could see it all coming towards us a swirling clouds of rain,  branches going every where as I drove home even going up on the grass on the sides of the road to avoid them.  The main road near me is blocked by a large branch hanging over it.  The airport had 78 mph winds down in NYC there were reports of apple sized hail.  What a day

Damage keeps adding up.  Now there is a state of emergency declared and a curfew

Glad you are OK, Pal!

I've been through lots of tornadoes (west Texas native, south Texas raised, Indiana resident), but I have not seen a "good one,"  yet.

About a month ago, a really quick moving storm came through. We had only a few shingles blown off, but my neighbor, diagonally across the street, lost a waist-wide, red maple tree. That was no wimpy tree, being an established red maple, but after the storm,  it looked like a pencil snapped between your fingers. It is difficult to imagine the force it took to do that to THAT kind of tree. None of his shingles were damaged, nothing else in his yard was touched, even his cheap deck table and chairs were still there - about thirty feet from the tree that snapped in two. His neighbor on the other side had a tarp covering some garage sale items (probably eighty feet away), but the tarp was not even lifted.

Sound like a tornado?  It does to me, but the "official" word was that it was caused by wind sheer.

I do have a nice pile of maple wood for the grille and another neighbor down the street who helped to clean it all up has a huge pile of wood for the winter.

I find inclement weather exciting myself.

Same here, but I would rather just watch.

I think it was a tornado also.  Most of the damage was a town but from where I was when it was going on , up on a hill over looking it it looked like a white sheet of swirling rain and wind moving across the landscape on the other side of the river

That damage looks very tornadoish to me. How close are those buildings to each other? If it was an entire town damaged it may have even been multiple tornadoes.
