Lawn people
« on: May 27, 2010, 08:58:10 PM »
I hate lawn people by that I mean those people who spend hours and hours on their grass.  Watering, cutting, weed wacking, raking blowing off the cut bits, covering it with chemicals have several in my neighborhood I have several on my street.  It's fine to have a nice lawn but they take it to a new level and the noise and smell of the crap they put on it drives me crazy

My neighbor was a little picky about it, always had to cut it a certain way, he ordered plugs of special grass for in back, always trimmed, edged, etc. When he got sick he really didn't want anyone else cutting it, but it got to the point that he couldn't, so I started. I tried to be just as picky, and I guess I was because he was always happy with it and I had a couple of other neighbors wanting theirs cut. ::)

He's been gone a year now, and I still cut it for his wife, and I'm still picky with it.

My lawn is a totally different story & full of dandelions, which I kind of like too much to ever kill.

My lawn gets a basic going over with a pussy of a lawn mower. I don't even edge it. We have the worst grass, this thick shit that is ugly as hell.

I don't have a lawn; I have a jungle of fruit trees, vines, canes and bushes instead, which mostly take care of themselves.

I did improve my lawn a few years ago. Adding a thick layer of sandy topsoil. Elevating it with approx 10 cm at the far end, and approx 5 cm close to the pavement. Giving it a little slope. And new grass on top.
I live in a wet spot of the village. And we're not allowed to put in drainage. Silly, this is the only bit of the village that hasn't got proper drainage. My lawn was more like a public swimming pool for sparrows than anything else. (I was happy with huge amounts of moss growing between what was supposed to be grass for the green effect)  I think they elevated groundwater levels at a time. Because it wasn't a sparrow pool when I moved here.

I now have a lawn I like. It has all it needs to do. It is green, I need to see natural green when I open my curtains (unless there is snow, that is fine too) And it is dry enough to walk and play on since the improvement.

I do take out dandelions now and then. Just like I do trim the edges now and then with a shortened saw. But not often. Only when it does make a big difference. And things like Daisies and Lady's Smock just stay. (as far as my kids don't eat them)

There is one 'perfect' lawn not far from me. Very tiny. And not done with too much chemicals. Mostly careful hand work. It does fit with the rest of the garden there. It fits with the man keeping it so perfect. It's not a lawn I wish for me.

Perfect lawn people are the ones usually complaining on fireworks or kids driving mopeds or whatever.  :thumbdn:

A few years ago a lawn-care company happened to call my father offering a deal on some sort of "lawn control" program.
He said, "We don't control our lawn," and hung up. :2thumbsup:

So long as it's green looks good when cut, I don't care about my lawn.
I don't even own a weed eater......That's gonna have to change though with all the rock edging I'm putting gin around the landscaping

The smart people in CA don't have lawns. We just plant a lot of drought-resistant botanicals and pat ourselves on the back for saving H20.

We have dandelion police here, so you can get a ticket if you let dandelions or other weeds on your property grow over a foot tall.
