Proper pancakes should have something like golden syrup and a squirt of lemon juice or lemon/lime juice and either honey or brown sugar on top.
English pancakes are different to the material the americans denote using the term 'pancake' here, those are what we'd call scotch pancakes afaik. Or similar to scotch pancakes.I like them with honey, or golden syrup and lime juice best What we english have as pancakes, the variety that is traditionally associated with shrove tuesday are simple and fast to make, just some egg, flour, milk, a pinch of salt and a little melted butter. None of that spreadable arsebiscuitery or that culinary abomination, marge (shudder...that stuff is just repurposed engine grease as far as food potential goes, its just not fit for people-food. Its synthetic jizm that would have been better off used for lubricating gears, or metal-metal contacts of other kinds)
These are kinda crepe-like, and can be used for savoury or sweet recipes. Only takes a few minutes to whip up a batch, but you will want more after the first, so its better to do a bigger batch of pancake batter.
http://britishfood.about.com/od/pancakeday/r/pancakes.htmThats what I call a pancake. Good 'un proper english nosh, I love 'em. Not had them in a while though, this thread reminded me. I think I'll have to get a couple of limes tomorrow perhaps and whip some batter up then get to frying, flipping and chowing down. Quite filling, despite the apparent lack of of bulk. Drizzled in syrup, with both a hefty squelch of lime juice and some grated off lime zest is even better.
