It is from "canned-in-the-winter" Rio Red fruit grown where my brother lives along the border of Texas. He always sends me a few cases of juice and a few fruit when it is fresh. (I send him local blueberries, far larger and more fresh and delicious than he can find where he lives, in addition to some Golden Delicious apples when they are in season in Michigan, which is not far away.)

The Brand name of the grapefruit juice is "TEX-SUN."  The juice is quite a bit closer to red than the typical ruby/pink/orange varieties. The parentage of the trees was hybridized for their ability to thrive in the high salt content soil of the area where they grow and also for extremely high fructose content. The trees represent the pinnacle of grapefruit hybridization for local growing conditions.

TEX-SUN  is the name of the canning company.  They offer many high quality products, canned from local growers.  They can everything that grows nearby, literally  - even Brussels sprouts - who the fuck ever even HEARD of canned Brussels sprouts -  (the KEY to their success is near perfect freshness).

Look for "RIO RED"  grapefruit juice, instead.

when neighbors returning from Florida brought over a case of the lovely stuff.

It is the most common, by far (it grows fairly well all along the southern border of this country and in many northern areas with irrigation in Mexico and even South America) and it actually was instrumental in helping the general public to begin (slowly)  to stop rejecting grapefruit, on sight.

It has effectively replaced the original "Toronja"  white variety.

I know what you mean about rejecting grapefruit on sight. I had some white grapefruit as a child and never wanted it again.
Then, 20 or so years later, along came the delicious ruby kind!

I did.

I was too late. I stayed here too long.

I met mountains of massively stenchful, cod infested (maybe it was not cod, but they are surely smuggling fish of some sort, in their shorts), beast people, waving off the tortured dead bodies from generations of offspring of yeasts and molds still  screaming from the depths of human exposure as the heritage of these tiny sporoforms are forever lost to evolution), raising their children to waft forth a similar stench.  (I can not imagine the biological desperation that would force someone to mate with one of these horrid creatures, but the very fact that they are carrying around younglings indicates that someone has done "TeH Dirty"  with these horribly stinky people.)

I had to make efforts to avoid these people.
