I was into anime about 10 years ago when I was 14 and they showed it on channel 4 at night.  Shows like "Crying Freeman"  and "Bubblegum Crisis" I remember.

i thought that the episode where they were trying to see kakashi sinsai's face was stupid.

i hate the joke episodes.  i like the training and battle episodes.

It helps if you start out watching an anime from the begining and one that doesn't have as many fillers. For example:

Full Metal Panic Fumoffu
Trigun
Ghost in the Shell S.A.C.
Fullmetal Alchemist
Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star
Gungrave
Rurouni Kenshin
Read or Die OVA
Serial Experiments Lain
Paranoia Agent
Tenchi Muyo!
Samurai Champloo
Rune Soldier

This is a list of good anime I've seen that don't have an ungodly amount of episodes and I have met very few people that hated them. Another good anime premiers tonight on Adult Swim called Bleach. Trinity Blood also airs tonight but I've never seen it so I don't know if it's good or not.

edit. Trinity Blood comes on at 12:00 a.m. and Bleach comes on at 12:30 a.m.

yea bleach is good but its ongoing and i didnt want to get into it cos of what happened with naruto, dont like waiting for the series to end..

seen a few movies tho and you didnt mention these (dont know why):

AKIRA.
UROTSUKIDOJI.
Casshan (& Caskern).
GitS2 Innocence
Hunter X Hunter +the 3 OVA's (which was a high second place in my opinion).
Saiyuki (for all the adults out there wanting an anime with adult humour lol).
Elfen Lied (again for people with a strange and warped personality).

but by far the best was that age old Anime called

Elfen Lied is a great one. I've seen a couple of episodes of Saiyuki, and it was kind of boring. Yeah, Bleach has a lot of episodes but it doesn't have as many episodes as Naruto. Also, it's probably the funniest anime I have seen for a long time. I didn't bring up the movies because it's easier to watch a thirty minute show than starting off with a full length film. Akira is a good movie to start off with though. Whoa, wait a second. You've seen most of the anime listed, but you've never heard of Tenchi??? Anyways, it's a good series except for Tenchi in Tokyo. It aired on the original Toonami. That used to be when Cartoon Network was consistent with choosing good anime.

anywho i forgot to mention (in a severe lapse of judgement):
Omnyou Taisenki (like Digimon but way better).
Souse no Aquarion (anime power rangers but better).
VANDREAD (not for the faint hearted, lots of sexual innuendo )

cant wait for the Naruto RPG's to come out or that lovely new one thats like Mortal "Naruto" Combat.
