PARIS (Reuters) – Many people love horses and traditionally, many French people have loved them even more with a side of salad.

That passion, however, has slowed to a trickle in the last couple of years as crisis-hit French consumers buy less meat and years of campaigning by animal rights groups take effect.

Looking to ram home their advantage, campaigners have launched a pre-Christmas blitz in Paris featuring posters of riding school ponies and graceful yearlings aimed at rending the hardest of hearts.

Anybody know if it's any good?

Apparently it is pretty good, or so my Nana says. She had it when she used to live in the Netherlands.

It's supposed to be pretty healthy meat to eat.

Had it as a kid. Very thin sliced smoked meat, for on bread.

Did not taste bad. Quite salty. I thought it one of the best things to have on bread when it came to meat.

The being thin sliced made the structure bearable for me. I have structure issues with meat.

It's rather cheap meat, and you'll find it in things with undefined meat in cafeteria. Stuff like croquettes and such.
As meat in a butcher-shop, here in the Netherlands you'll find it as smoked, salted, extremely thin sliced meat.

There will be quite some horse-meat in the UK too I guess. It is what happens to horses who get injured in racing. They are probably worked into pet food too.

That's one thing I couldn't consume (but I've had moose and that's good), but i'm curious...would it be considered a red meat or a white meat?

Over here croquettes are usually made with chicken. I have never seen horse meat in a butcher shop but it is used in pet food.

Nearly fell off my chair laughing!

Back to the original. (well sort of...)
I thought croquettes are potato...
In UK quite a lot of horses that are shot are taken by the hunt to feed the hounds, its an easy way for owners to dispose of the carcass fairly cheaply, the hunt will also take "fallen stock"- animals which are badly injured and need to be shot they will come and shoot them.
I realy dont have a problem with people eating horses like any other animal as long as they are looked after well and treated kindly being slaughtered, what I have a problem with is live exports to europe where animals (of any sort) are transported for 8+ hours stuffed in cramped lorries just to be taken to slaughter when they could easily be killed here and the meat transported.
