I did say to you all that having me as a newsbox bitch was a bad idea  :(

No, you did an excellent job.

What I don't think people realize is that it takes nearly nothing to have the site shut down. It's shut down first, ask questions later, if they even bother to really ask or care. The ex has his own computer company so this is what we do day to day and I can back Odeon up on what he's saying. I know he doesn't need me too, but being in this business for 10+ years I know what he's getting at.

Carry on.
It doesn't take too much to restore the site from a backup, elsewhere either. Antagonising the membership with this callout does nothing to protect this site. If Odeon dealt with this in a more adult fashion (anyone thought of PM's - asides Camilla did hint rather strongly she did not want to be doing the newsbox etc...), the risk to the site would be greatly reduced.

:finger:

The point it, I don't want to be forced to restore the site elsewhere. I don't want to have to find another host. It's my fucking server space and I pay for it.

Tell you what: you start your own board and run it the way you see fit.

And what's this shit about "antagonising the membership with a callout"? I'm not allowed to call people out because I own the fucking site?

Then what is the callout board for? It's for this purpose. Odeon had an issue, he called Bints out on it, she had a chance to respond. It doesn't put the site at risk. If anything, it probably helped the situation because if someone watching the server it's stored on flagged the site, they would see that the issue was dealt with.

of course you can restore from backups but why put us in that position to begin with? (not directing this specifically to Bints, I mean in general). What we have here works. There are few rules that are being asked of us. I don't see what the huge deal is to follow those rules.
Sometimes having the show costs more than dealing with things quitely. All Odeon's approach does is encourage more people to behave in a similar fashion - that is where the problem lies. Having a clear and quickly enforced TOS is more than enough to ensure the sites survivability. Hosts normally give a warning before taking action.

Google is your friend.

True. But I suppose the danger lies mostly with the fact, that a disgruntled user could exploit the TOS violation to retaliate against this site.
In which case, Odeon is only encouraging them to do so.

It's always a risk, Hadron. If you'd had any experience with this sort of thing you'd know that.

And again: Why should I be the only one here who is not allowed to call someone out when I'm pissed off?

The TOS this the TOS that - SHOW IT TO ME THE FUCKING TOS.  I will scrutinize it and see if I'm in the wrong or you are just a twatty , paranoid buntch.

I'm starting to get sick of this place quitle frankly.  Have been for a whilem but the few people on here whom I like a lot keep me from doing a Lit.  Not to mention I need the human interaction from time to time especially with lack o decent people around me in this stupid city

The TOS is readily available at Hostgator's webpage and I've linked to it often enough, I feel. Google is your friend.

But this is not about the TOS, specifically, it's about staying below the radar because we don't want our host to scrutinise the whole site. There's enough shit in here to cause us problems, in spite of it all being perfectly within the TOS. Hosts have been known to shut down inconvenient sites BEFORE ever contacting the owner and Hostgator is not an exception in that respect. The reason I've elected to stay with them is that they are relatively liberal, their servers tend to stay online and be relatively fast, and they are not too expensive. Also, they do tolerate a lot of stuff others won't.

I2 started elsewhere, you know, but was forced to move because the original host didn't allow porn.

I don't want you to leave, Bint. I like reading your stuff and I2 wouldn't be the same without you. But ultimately it's your decision and if you want to leave because of all this, then so be it.

1. i didnt know we werent allowed to post porn where non members could see it

Sorry if that's not been explicit enough. Why do you think there is an 18-yo limit?

Quote
2. its not like theres someone from hostgator lurking on this site 24/7, what are the chances it wou.d have done anything?

Hard to say but it's been known to happen. Also, it only takes one pissed-off former member. It happened with I2's original host, afaik.

3. she did say she didnt wanna be noozbox bitch anymore

Fair enough, but I think the staff interpreted it as we could talk her into it again. She did a great job, you know.

i understand the 18yr old limit

but there are plenty of sites out there where porn is visible without logging in

if porn should only be in the members only sections, then why arent 17 yr olds allowed to post in Free for All etc?

You can call them out - just that it would do the site a lot of good if you were diplomatic about these kind of things. Now the next person to get disenfranchised with this place knows exactly what to do...

You have a good point here.

Good point. The answer is that Free for All was free for everyone, including non-members, before we were repeatedly attacked and we had to limit the availability of that forum to members. We've never considered opening up any part of the board for minors, however, so allowing them to register is out of the question.

Post nudes in the newsbox?

Hadron, it would do this site a lot of good if you'd kindly shut the fuck up when your only input seems to be to disagree with me, no matter what.

Something on those lines, yes. But you really do show yourself up as easy to antagonise.
