There's a short story about a society where everyone is forced by law to wear weighted vests and helmets that play loud, distracting noises, individually weighted and calibrated so that everyone conforms to the same low standard, with nobody having a physical or mental advantage over anyone else. I don't remember who wrote it or what it was called, but there was a crappy made-for-TV film adaptation, and I read a similar story where everyone was made equally crippled through surgery and genetic modification.
If people want to spend their money on eye surgery or nose jobs or whatever, that should be up to them. If you want greater equality, vote for increased taxes on people in higher income brackets and more tax credits or social programs for the poor, but don't try to enforce equality by restricting what people can do the money they're left with.
