You usually get a harder punishment for a big tax crime than for a rape, btw. If you're under 21, and, especially if you're an immigrant, you can get away with 2-3 months of "youth care" for rape (no, I'm not kidding), while, if you trick $1 million or so from the government, you'll get 3-4 years in prison...

What prison is 'supposed to be' depends on the society.  It can be a place of suffering and punishment, a place of therapy and rehabilitation, a warehouse for inconvenient humans and any of a wide variety of other things.  The 'suffering and punishment' prison model has a poor record when it comes to improving societies, and the 'therapy and rehabilitation' model has had better results, but if you care more about punishing offenders than improving your society, the 'suffering and punishment' model may be just the thing for you.

I care about giving people what they DESERVE. If you're a child murderer(or ANY kind of predatory killer for that matter)since your victim(s) cant be rehabilitated why the fucking hell do you deserve a second chance? I say people who commit crimes like that need to be PUNISHED! BTW, FYI, US crime stats have shown that Violent Felons have an EXTREMELY HIGH rate of recidivism and there are hundreds(perhaps thousands)of violent criminals who were paroled and sure enough they REOFFENDED. When form NY governor George Pataki put an end to parole/early release for violent criminals the states homicide rate dropped by 40%! The thing about violent people is that the Only thing that they respect and perhaps truly understand is raw Power. THATS why there's prisons in the first place, so violent people can be together and away from potential victims.
