Here's another hole that has never been answered to my satisfaction.

In Book 5, Harry saw the Thestrals for the first time (because he witnessed the death of Cedrick Diggory).  Now, as a child he'd witnessed the deaths of his parents.  Other kids who'd lost parents to Voldemort (e.g. Luna - her mom died, I think) had seen the Thestrals.  Why not Harry?
