My question; did any of you ever teach her anything?

Baby steps. The improvement she made the year I lived with her in a flat was that at the end she knew to ask her flatmates for help, when it came to dinner, and not her mother. The poor soul had learned from her English mother that every vegetable had to boil for at least one and a half hour or so.
(The English influence did make that her desserts were astonishing and outstanding though, when she chose to make the effort of making dessert)
The Chernobyl incident did cause a major fall back for her. For months she would only serve tinned vegetables, boiled even longer, our explanations on radio activity did not help. But, she did get past that, in the end.

Then she took a trip to Indonesia, and after that, she was able to prepare very tasty dishes.

We all complimented her with her improved skills. Sometimes things do change for the better, even when it looks nearly impossible.
