Watching several episodes of "Locked up abroad"
« on: July 21, 2012, 02:17:28 AM »
I am noticing a pattern

First of all, background info:
When drug smugglers are about to move a great shipment of drugs - they _do not_ put this in the hands of airhead tourists.
They use airhead tourists as _decoys_

Whenever you thought drugs are smuggled through these douchebags, this is incorrect. These douchebags are simply systematic decoys. Havent you ever wondered why they always seem to smuggle between 1 and 10 kilos each time? Who the hell orders 10 kilos of heroin from one country to another, considering the risk of each movement? They dont, they order in the tens of kilos, hundreds at the time. even tons

And of course, hiring a decoy needs to follow a certain system. You cant just ask anybody to give up their life for you "Excuse me, but i wonder if you can be so kind as to get yourself life-time-sentenced, so we can move our own main shipment across the border"

The key is:

1) Find someone with clear signs of ADHD/ very distracted personality/poor ability to think AHEAD. I have seen this live, by the way. My dodgy friends would always send _the_ most ADHD-ridden airhead with a backpack to oslo, to smuggle kilos-at-the-time of hash to trondheim, and always pay him with petty favors, like "we're gonna give you an x-box game for it!" "AW YOU MEAN IT!? A GAME!? FOR FREE :0"

2) Offer a prize, as above^ for short trips, offer an x-box game. The airhead you have secured, is for that exact reason. Anybody with more of a fore-thought would realize the _tremendous_ risk (besides, they would realize that in many cases, they arent even meant to make the trip - since they are decoys in the first place)
The prize usually is the trip itself. Sounds ridiculous doesnt it? But thats how they do it.
Instead of saying "Hi, we need you to go to fuckin colombia, and smuggle 10 k's of cocaine back"
theyll instead say "Hi, do you want a FREE vacation in colombia? All expenses covered!!!"
to an airhead "all expenses" sounds super-duper generous, sometimes theyll even throw in 1000 dollars of pocket money "A WHOLE THOUSAND OMG :0"
A norwegian mule, sentenced in bolivia i think, was given approx 2000 dollars (10 000 krones) as pocket money, and she of course found this to be mega-generous, and hurried off to bolivia to have a free vacation, oh and bring a backpack of cocaine into the airport.

As you can see, the mule being a distracted type is absolutely vital. As soon as they go "wait a minute, 10 kilos of cocaine, that sounds risky" you just cut in "vacation! sun! palms! all expenses!" and they turn into a little sun again "YAY!!!!"

its absolutely frustrating to watch, especially considering the saddening fact that they are simply decoys - not only are they not meant to make the delivery, but they are often ratted out by the smugglers themselves - so to guarantee the effect wanted by the decoy. more than often, officials will be waiting for the decoy mule, with a name, description, and sometimes even a detailed description of where/how the drugs are hidden.

but they always fall for it.
most of these episode tell of these stories, and nearly every one of them emphasized precisely how excited they were about being a drug mule, with their mind solely focused on the vacation-aspect of it.
to me, its mindboggling, but the explanation is of course that they are hopelessly distracted types.

I'm sure you are right.

Too bad that "justice" doesn't care whether it's an airhead decoy or the bad guys themselves. "Justice" does only care about someone being locked up, so that the average citizens think that society is "safe".

I like that show. And I agree. One episode had a guy agree to go to Nicaragua and bring back a kilo of cocaine for $5000. The coke cost $1500 so he got $3500 profit for stupid risk. They really aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

oh yes, the justice system comes down on them hard.
one could debate wether its unfair, or wether they have it coming due to sheer ignorance :D im kindov on the fence about that right now, on one side, they have been fooled - on the other, they should goddamn know better...

Especially smuggling heroin ANYWHERE at all. One woman was smuggling it out of Bangladesh, got popped and initially tried playing the hardass for a few minutes until the cop interrogating her pointed out that she was eligible for the death penalty!  :o At that point she could not spill her guts fast enough. At least know what you may be in for.  ::) When I was in the Navy quite a few of our people went on an Indian Ocean Detachment to fly spy missions over Iran and Persian Gulf during the Hostage crisis. Since they were going to be stopping in Singapore and Malaysia those two countries drug penalties were posted in the squadron. In Spain a lot of people smoked hash, took speed and occasionally Pallidan, it was illegal but Spain is generally easy going unless you do violent crime. Had I gone on an IO Det there is no way in hell I would have even thought about smoking hash. Singapore and Malaysia don't fuck around.

Being a drug smuggler is one of the few things that you can really get busted for in Sweden. You can get 14 years, and it's not unusual that they get at least 10 years for it.

I have a little "saying" that is so, so obvious, but surprisingly non-obvious if you look around: "Know what country you're in"
It is so important to know where the hell on the planet you are. If you dont know what country you're in at a given time, you are truly a moron - and surprisingly, theres tons of such people.
George bush thought he was in slovakia when he was in slovenia. It actually is a big deal :D

And of course - know the customs in the country you're in. If you visit saudi arabia, as a blonde chick, dont go around flashing your cleavage, theres PLENTY of other places you can flash your boobs. If you go to the philippines, dont get all "WHAT!? HOW CAN THAT BE!?" when they give you the death penalty for smuggling drugs. All one had to do, is to have checked beforehand "oh, damn, they got the death penalty there"
I'm not gonna go to india to get high, because i know they tend to come down hard on hipster backpackers going there to get high - cannabis smoking is illegal in india. There are exceptions, but nobody's gonna believe that you're an old guru :D
In fact, im probably not gonna go to india period :D

I'm actually extremely law-abiding in foreign countries.  I have been publically drunk in Greece, but I'm not sure if that's even illegal.

I may be an airhead, but I will not be a decoy!  :zombiefuck:

Depends how drunk :D
Mediterranean culture isnt as liberal to the "cannon drunk" we're used to in scandinavia. I find it very refreshing actually, I was out a saturday night in Valencia, spain, and compared to little trondheim, valencia was remarkably quiet. music pumping from discos, sure, but people were talking, sipping their drinks, dancing.
in trondheim they do that too, but they shouuut "WAAAAAAH!!!" just for the sake of shouting, they vomit, theyre overly drunk as a norm:D and they arent used to that down there.

my brother got shitfaced in valencia, and almost arrested by the police there just for being loud and obnoxious in public. my (younger) uncle daniel was with him, and had to explain to the police "look, he's norwegian, he cant help it" and promised them to bring him safely home - this WHILE my brother was yelling obnoxiously at the cops :D

Oh, no, they dont do that :D
Usually, they will contact people in night clubs, thats where they can find many airheads packed together - plus a high chance people are allready excited by drugs.
they never "twist your arm" in that sense, they present it as a gift, an offer, for you to make lots of money. quite often, theyll even present themselves as legitimate folks (which they are - in their murky business :D)

I was drunk as hell. I fell asleep on a bench outside a pottery, while my mum was buying some ceramics

I never seen a drunk Greek on a Saturday night. The only drunk I have seen in Greece were other tourists.

exactly
and if you ask them, then they tell you "of course i get drunk :0 SOOO DRUNK!!!" but thats of course what we would refer to as "merely a bit tipsy" :D

in a sense, what we're used to, could be considered "routine alcohol overdoses"
we actually drink till our bodies begin to refuse it, we vomit, and fuck it we drink on top of it! then we pass out :D
to a greek or a spaniard, that is jaw-dropping
"why on EARTH would you drink that much?"
"idunno. its fun" :D

Yeah Zeg knowing what is okay or not in a given place is a great idea. It is generally easy to research too.

Both good policies.
