I think you are doing the right thing by not picking up the kittens yet. I looked after a stray cat a long time ago and she ended up having kittens in the middle of the night on my bed. I didn't want them to stay there so I made a bed in the bottom of my wardrobe and the mother cat moved her kittens in there. I then had a load of washing to do, heh.
