Getty Heir Dies
« on: February 09, 2011, 04:50:52 AM »
I remember this kidnapping case from when I was young. Mafia scum cut off his ear and sent it to the family. I didn't know about the stroke and paralysis until I saw this article. http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2011/02/oil_heir_j_paul_getty_iii_dies.html?mid=partnerfeed Talk about a shit life in spite of lots of money. Some people seem to bounce back from real severe adversity and some don't. In Getty IIIs case the adversity was severe.

This Getty dying made me think of a friend. A friend I knew from high school was in Panama on a Army training exercise in September 1981. While on liberty he and his friends were drinking at the beach and he jumped in the water and hit a sandbar breaking his neck. His friends initially thought he was clowning so he almost drowned. Three days later on the 16th September 1981 I was processed off of active duty at the USN Treasure Island Base and my mother told me about his mishap while driving me home. After he got out of the hospital he never could quit using booze and crank, and the paraplegia left his body considerably weaker than it would have otherwise been. So he died almost three years ago @ 47 years old. Everyone gets bad breaks in life, and paraplegia is worse than most.

omg ppk that is a real sad story!   I spose in the case of Getty,  he could easily fund his habit - easier for him but worse in a double edged sword kind of way...

...and your friend too,  that is really tragic.  you never said if he was married or had a family?   i had just been on the phone to a friend moaning about my heating and my split ends -
and i feel bad now :'(
blah blah blah

He was married to my best friend from teen years younger sister and they had two baby boys. I had a couple of days off between when I arrived back in the SF Bay Area from Spain to visit and drink with friends and family. His wife told me then (3 to 4 days before he broke his neck) that she had told him already that she wanted a divorce. She stuck with him for the next 18 months until rehab was done and they split up then. Don't feel bad about your own concerns, they are valid things to be concerned about.  :plus:

To an extent knowing that others have it worse can help keep a person from feeling like they are drowning, but you still have to deal with things.

If you read the link that was at the bottom of the article, you will see more on his family and that he cut off ties with his grandfather and father, so it certainly wasn't Getty money funding drugs and alcohol.
