In Norway it's less sensitive, but sensitivity regarding it is being imported through American TV

When I was little, it was okay to use the word "svart", as in "black", "a black person", but that is much more sensitive allready, and we never had black slaves or any such drama here. We have black bus-drivers and newspaper-boys.

At the same time, the few black people I've talked to don't mind the word "black", since they are - in their own words - quite black.

In daily life you refrain from offending simply by not behaving offensively. If you accidentally say something wrong, you explain and apologize, and the person will most likely laugh it off, and forgive, unless we are dealing with sociopaths.
You can stand on a city corner for days, weeks, months even, and watch people not offend each others

In mass-media its more difficult, cus the messages are conveyed as they are, on record, and won't go away

Yes, but at the same time, this is very cultural, local, and therefore flexible. It's often seen in history, how characters suddenly change, from good to bad, or bad to good, like native americans presented as vicious savages - then exaggerated as "noble savages", or the "magic negro" trope

in Norway we don't have so much equivalent, except maybe a hint of "noble/magic saami", but only barely
