Local minority languages
« on: February 05, 2012, 06:20:39 AM »
Anyone else get TV programming in a language that's spoken by a tiny minority of local people?  When I was a kid and watched TV more, there were always a fair number of Gaelic programs during the day; mostly low budget cartoons and educational programs.  I don't know any Gaelic myself; my parents don't speak it and the Gaelic TV programs didn't rub off on me.

Scottish Gaelic is a pretty good language for singing:

We have Spanish programming here, but Spanish speakers are not such a tiny minority.

I've thought about going to a class to learn Irish, but that was mostly to piss off the bigots in my family.

Not really worth it, as it could end up causing more trouble than it's worth.

We have stuff in Spanish but as it was said that's a big minority.  Other languages there are some shows mostly local public access in Polish,Yugoslavian,    and at times even French.  If I wanted to I can get cable TV packages geared toward a bunch of different countries  but you have to ask and pay extra.  On a side note my one of my grandmothers spoke a little Gaelic and her uncle was fluent in it.

We have 2 Spanish cable TV channels and maybe 2 or 3 Spanish radio stations.  There is a sizeable Vietnamese population in Eastern New Orleans, but not much recognition of their language in the media.

I agree that Gaelic is a pretty good language for singing. That I don't understand any of it isn't a problem for me.

Here in Holland there are about nihil folks that can speak Gaelic, I think. Folks in province Friesland (1 of 12 Dutch provinces) speak Frisian though. It's a separate language from 'normal' Dutch and most folks outside that province cannot comprehend it mostly.

And qua TV, which I absolutely love, we have numerous foreign channels. Several US ones, 3 or 4 UK ones, 2 Belgium ones, 6 German ones, 3 French (1 is Arte but it's been dubbed in German), a Spanish, Italian and even a Turkish one. I have a thing with languages, I believe.
