States acerting rights

HELENA, Mont. – Montana is trying to trigger a battle over gun control — and perhaps make a larger point about what many folks in this ruggedly independent state regard as a meddlesome federal government.

In a bill passed by the Legislature earlier this month, the state is asserting that guns manufactured in Montana and sold in Montana to people who intend to keep their weapons in Montana are exempt from federal gun registration, background check and dealer-licensing rules because no state lines are crossed.

Coming to a head I hope the states win.  The federal government has grown way too big in recent years

Montanans are BRAVE!

The Second Amendment means what it means. You are allowed to have weapons, whether you are in a militia or not. ESPECIALLY if you're in a militia.

Vote Guns and Dope!

That will never happen in Europe, unless a (civil) war breaks out. More probably will all private guns be banned in a few decades.  :grrr:

A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined,
but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a
status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them,
which would include their own government.
--George Washington

As a lineal descendant of Christopher Gadsden--one of the early Founding fathers and (apparently) the designer of the "DON'T TREAD ON ME" flag--I heartily endorse this statement.

Europeans don't know what freedom is. If I'd say what you said above on a Swedish forum full of gun owners, all but at most 2-3 people would call me an idiot and conspiracy theorist and urge me to move to the US.  ::)

I think the whole States thing is bullshit. Laws are different from state to state and even county to county and city to city. I'm tired of being harassed for stuff I have no idea is illegal where I am. If they don't post it at the borders, then ignorance is justifiable. In Virginia, radar detectors and scramblers are illegal still and some places do not allow alcohol sales, or any type of sales, on Sundays. WTF?

Do you think gay marriage would have come about if it was up to the federal government?  States rights serve the purpose of expanding rights of individuals and more reflect the people who they affect

Same-sex marriage is banned in more states than it is okay in. It is not a state issue! Equal rights under the law is fundamentally a federal issue. The Supreme Court will eventually set things straight. This is clearly a violation of the Constitution! I fucking hate W and his minions! I want to marry a dude just to make a point. Just like I will burn a flag on the steps of the Capitol if they ever try to ban it as free speech! I otherwise have no interest in burning the flag. Nor do I have any interest in marrying a dude. Except Michael Stipe, but that is a whole other issue.

Agreed. I would rather have more options for governments to live under than try to force-fit everything into one centralized system, even if it means inconvenience when traveling.

In Europe they make all states the same as much as possible. They forced Switzerland, which isn't even a EU member, to change its liberal gun law.  :grrr:
