Title: Ask wandrew anything
Post by: punkdrew on September 09, 2008, 02:33:07 AM
Just remember...half the lies I tell you are not true. ; )

You may fire when ready, Gridley.

I keep getting you and Sir Les mixed up because the guy on your avatars looks like the same person.

Who is Gridley?

from wikipedia:

Charles Vernon Gridley (24 November 1844 – 25 May 1898) was an officer in the United States Navy during the American Civil War and the Spanish-American War.
Captain Gridley took command of the Olympia, Admiral George Dewey's famous flagship on 27 April 1898. During the Battle of Manila Bay on 1 May 1898, Dewey gave his famous command, "You may fire when ready, Gridley," immortalizing the captain.
After the destruction of the Spanish fleet and the capture of Manila, Gridley was obliged to leave his command because of his health, and died en route to the United States at Kobe, Japan.

Supposedly, the Spanish ships Gridley fired on were attacking US ships. They weren't. But somebody wanted a war started--maybe Hearst?--and that did it. Just goes to show that the Gulf of Tonkin was NOT an isolated incident. The US is REALLY good at shit-stirring.

Curiosity:

Do you still use vinyl for music on occasion?
Title: Re: Ask wandrew anything
Post by: punkdrew on September 12, 2008, 07:46:22 PM
I do! I also use a vinyl to CD converter (TEAC)

One of my fave recordings is Snake Oil Symphony/Soap Opera Suite by composer Daniel Steven Crafts. www.dscrafts.net It's a brilliant album full of tape melange/musique concrete all done with analog machines (1982). Is available from composer but only on vinyl. Also have personal family recordings on acetates AND 78s needing to be copied to digital formats.

So yes I still love vinyl but love CDs and MP3 files too.  No 8tracks or cylinders though.  :P

Cool!
Something you had said before left me wondering. Sounds like a nice analog collection.

I kept quite a few LPs from the old days and I have found many bargain priced treasures in the last few years, sifting through hundreds of Roger Whittaker, Barry Manilow and Christmas albums. Goodwill gets top mention as my favorite record store these days.
I don't have many 78s, but the ones I have are all classical, live performances. Some nice holographic listening experiences among them, too.

99.99 percent of my records and CDs are still back East.  Lots of punk, prog-rock, New Wave, smatterings of jazz, metal and classical, and some really strange shit.

Creating a piece of writing, a photograph or a song. Doing something that causes the wifeperson to experience happiness.  Fermented beverages.

I got to perform it @ a church in Anaheim with the Cypress Choir Sunday 10/5. I've decided to drop out through. Too much passive-aggressive going behind my back instead of directly talking to me about sections where I have trouble/am going off-key. Also found out last week I was on provisional status from the git-go which pleased me not at all. And no recording was made due to complicated legal bullshit.

Hey do you know of Joely Richardson?

If I remember right, she's Miranda Richardson's sister, which means she's one of Vanessa Redgrave's daughters. I don't know her work too well. I think Miranda's an excellent actress, though, so I wouldn't be surprised if Joely is too, what with having Vanessa for a mum and Michael Redgrave as a grandfather. Natasha Richardson (also a sister) is an excellent actress as well--really liked her in A Handmaid's Tale as well as Fat Man & Little Boy. Had a crush on her for a while in the 1990s.

They're not related. Joely and Natasha are sisters though. Vanessa only had two daughters. I've done some research.

I liked her in 101 Dalmatians. That's when I first recognized her but the funny thing is she didn't get recognized by others till she played in The Patriot. I assume that's when she got real famous in our country. I first recognized her sister in The Parent Trap. All the movie surfers has to do was mention her sister played in 101 Dalmatians and I got excited after my brothers told me about it. Then I went and watched the show myself and then saw the movie. Got excited even more when they menioned "Cruella de Vil" in the movie. My mother just looked at me after one of the twins said it and saw my excitment. She knew I'd have a reaction to it since I was obsessed with 101 Dalmatians back then.

Come si, come sa. Translation: "Six of one half a dozen of the other." Or, "it's the same, only different." "The more things change..." Etc.
But I have some info as to why certain things I do piss J off so bad and why she can't back off. Am forming a plan t make necc. personal changes to promote greater relationship harmony. Details as they become available....

It's good that you are gaining insight into that situation.  Now if only you could just teach some to J.

She feels the same. She's really been insistent that I get treatment and d/x for ADD, Asperger's etc. She's right, but I'm scared too. I got enough problems--don't want to give the head doctors with itchy scrip-writing fingers an excuse to work on me.

Hey punkdrew do you think of yourself more as a misanthrope, healthy cynic or starry eyed idealist?

A misanthropic cynical idealist.   I think Humanity can do a lot better. It just needs to work at it. As do I.

Do you collect books?

Yes. Entirely too many according to my mother (RIP) and my sig other. Here's my general response to people who think I have too many:

"Do you want to know the...ancient concepts in their own language? Learn the intent of the men who wrote them? From Moses to the tribunal on Alpha Centauri III? Books, my friend. Books."--Samuel T Cogley (Elisha Cook) in the ST: OTS episode "Court Martial"

Heard last night that Natasha Richardson died. Seriously bummed. Great actress, lovely woman. Feel sad for Liam Neeson and her children.  :'(
