Magic trick costs teacher job
By: Janie Porter
Land 'O Lakes, Florida -- The stories in the news about inappropriate relationships between teachers and students have been overwhelming. There was even a substitute teacher in New Port Richey who got in trouble after investigators say she had a relationship with an underage student.
Well, another Pasco County substitute teacher's job is on the line, but this time it's because of a magic trick.
The charge from the school district — Wizardry!
Substitute teacher Jim Piculas does a 30-second magic trick where a toothpick disappears then reappears.
But after performing it in front of a classroom at Rushe Middle School in Land 'O Lakes, Piculas said his job did a disappearing act of its own.
"I get a call the middle of the day from head of supervisor of substitute teachers. He says, 'Jim, we have a huge issue, you can't take any more assignments you need to come in right away,'" he said.
When Piculas went in, he learned his little magic trick cast a spell and went much farther than he'd hoped.
"I said, 'Well Pat, can you explain this to me?' 'You've been accused of wizardry,' [he said]. Wizardry?" he asked.
Tampa Bay's 10 talked to the assistant superintendent with the Pasco County School District who said it wasn't just the wizardry and that Picular had other performance issues, including "not following lesson plans" and allowing students to play on unapproved computers."
Piculas said he knew nothing about the accusations.
"That... I think was embellished after the fact to try to cover what initially what they were saying to me," he said.
After the magic trick, Rushe's principal requested Piculas be dismissed. Now, Piculas believes the incident may have bewitched his ability to get a job anywhere else.
"I still have no idea what my discipline involves because I've never received anything from the school district actually saying what it entails," said Piculas.
As a substitute teacher, the Pasco County School District considers Piculas to be an "at will employee." That means the district doesn't need to have cause for not bringing him back at all.

If he'd been a woman, would he have been accused of witchcraft?

When did Florida get so fucking crazy?
(St. Lucie County, Florida) A 30-year-old science teacher, Tiffany Shepherd, has been fired from her position at Port St. Lucie High School.
Shepherd claims that she was booted because of her second job as a bikini-clad mate for a charter fishing boat operation. On the contrary says school spokesman Janice Karst indicating that Shepherd was released because of more than 30 unexcused absences from work.
She also said school officials did not know about her job as a "bikini" mate until after they filed her release paperwork. "As far as her claim about the boat job, we did not know about that until after she had been non-renewed," Karst said.
If officials had known, she added, it may have given administrators additional reason to discipline Shepherd. "Teachers tend to have higher levels of standards," she said.
Shepherd counters that rumors about her bikini job were widely known by school board members and administrators before she was fired and the knowledge was a factor in the decision to can her.
Incidentally, Smokin Em Charters is hiring. The company combines fishing with bikini-clad, sometimes topless, female helpers and new talent is being sought.
I never had teachers that looked like this when I was a kid:

I blame the Equator, the closer you get, the crazier the residents are.

Yeah its awesome. That is why moving to Miami is somewhat appealing. Too bad it is overpopulated. I just can't stand cold weather, have to wear too much clothing, which is annoying. Shorts and sandals ftw.

Good thing he didn't live in Alabama. They would probably just have shot him immediately, before going back to fucking their cousins. Excuse me -- I mean, fucking their cousins in a god-fearing way.
Man, I fucking hate theistic religion.

My mother was raped by rednecks and left to die in a ditch there when I was 10. They also force-fed her grits to make her more complacent. And Budweiser. And grits.
I... I don't want to talk about it... :(

I'm glad that your mom was not really gang-raped by rednecks and left to die in a ditch in Alabama when you were ten. I'm not sure how old you are, but I think that a tourist gang-raped by rednecks in Alabama then left to die in a ditch probably would have made the news, even back then. I grew up in Alabama.

In any case, it's simply not funny.

Most people do. I think that (luckily) this kind of thinking is fairly rare.

have to disagree - sadly, it's all too common, whether overt, covert or implicit.

I think it's fairly rare but highly visible. The morons take a lot of space.
-
obviously i notice it more because i'm on the receiving end of it, and i can assure you it isn't rare at all.

Fair enough. I won't argue it.

I found this to be mostly true as well, while I was growing up in the South.
Respect is perhaps not quite the correct word, but men definitely tended to be more solicitous of women there.
When my car broke down at night near Birmingham, Alabama and I was trying to push it further off the road, a man stopped immediately and helped me push it. Then he offered me a ride to the next exit, so I could call for help. He drove me to a store at that exit where he knew the woman who was working there and left me to wait there because he knew that I would be safe with her.
