I've started to post, so I thought I should probably introduce myself... 8)
First off, I'm not sure about my AS status, I have not been diagnosed but I do have quite a few traits, moreso when I was younger. Over the years I have painfully overcome a lot of social obsticles that, looking around at most people seemed to be intuitive or obvious to them.
There are many examples, but one that stands out most is as a COLLEGE SENIOR someone told me "You don't ever look people in the eyes and it freaks people out." It was the strangest thing in the world, and I looked him in the eye right after he said it and thought I was going to panic, it felt so intrusive and forward. But then slowly I started to pay attention to people and realized everyone else was doing it, and when I did it, they seemed to listen better to me... and as I did it more I had an easier time relating to people. Then I got really pissed off that there was this 'secret' to relationships that NOBODY ever let me in on!!
Now I have very little trouble looking people in the eyes, and I don't even have to do it purposefully anymore.
So, while I may or may not be more or less in the AS spectrum, I do relate to a lot of the same issues.

hi orbit.
i can give you one piece of advice.
watch out for postie... :D
-
You've not got AS. As an aspie, i will always struggle weith eye contact no matter how much i work on it. We cant learn to look at eyes naturally without glaring. We just arent wired that way.
-
see that.
we have an official diagnosis criteria. all the clinicians and other experts have been working overtime to get it down to an exact dx.
but eamonn, being king asper, has had the answers all along.

Never mind mcjagger. He's the cooky NT of the group. We just keep him for fits and giggles. This place would be boring if we didnt allow those with psychological problems on the site, though it was mostly intended for those with mental diversities like AS.

i am 8), in my own mind

Welcome, Orbit to Intensitysquared You may find out there might be a few crazies around here at Intensiysquared to in the end.

Examine McJ's genetic markers, I say!
But can orbit gaze into peter's eyes? ???
-
Thanks for the welcome everyone. I've been lurking long enough and read enough threads to have an idea of what I'm getting myself into. *L*
I'm not surprised at all that there are different ideas of where the cut off line should be on the spectrum. I'd probably not call myself an 'Aspie' but I would say I identify WITH Asperger's Syndrome.
As for the term 'genetic markers' - That would be cool if we knew what they were... Does anyone know who is doing the latest research on it?
Orbit
ps. gaze into peter's eyes literally or figuratively?
-
Weclome.

:D
It is my favorite gum... and dirty mouths frighten me, so they are all on their own. I get creeped out when the dental hygienist tells me about some of the gross mouths she has to clean. Fine, compliment me on my hygene if you feel you must, but please, leave out the gorey comparison details!! BLECH!
Oddly, the gum has nothing to do with the reason I chose this name. I don't know why I chose this name. I like it though, it gives me a floaty feeling.

Wow! You are soooo clever. Are you one of those cool people who can make a sex joke about anything? And here I thought my play on words had some wit to it... little did I know my good, clean fun would be so quickly out done by a mastermind.

Hi Orbit. Nice picture.

Hi Callaway. :) Thanks, and you too. Did you take the photo of the rainbow?
-
Yes. I saw it and it was so beautiful. It was a whole rainbow and it stretched across the whole sky. The photo does not really do it justice.

There's one m and two n's in Eamonn.

Hi Orbit
This is my first post (just joined) and you seem a lot like me. In my 20's I was told after a job interview that I never looked at the interviewers. Next interview I forced myself and was later asked why I was staring so intently (almost hostile). I now think I have got it right, but I am always telling myself, "look away, its too long in the eyes", now look back its too long looking away". However it seems an automatic response, like changing gears in a car.
Cheers
Bazza (not my real name)
