Title: I'm game - what do you want to know?
Post by: Triste on June 26, 2006, 12:50:00 AM
Since I'm now a full member, I figure that I'm fair game.

what type of ennuendo is that:
talking about a full member and you being game.

another freudian slip?
or the theme of your ask away thread?

Combination of Freudian Slip AND theme AND the fact that I like word play a lot.

When did you lose your virginity and how?
It was very boring and anticlimactic.  I'd been wanting to lose it for years, in fact I spent a semester in France my senior year of high school and was very disappointed that none of the French guys took advantage of me.  When I was 18 I very briefly dated a guy and I guess I was overt enough about what I wanted that it finally happened.  It was pretty disappointing, very fast, I was kind of embarassed at how bad it was, so I stopped seeing him after that.

1. what do you mostly have in common with most aspers?

2. what do you least have in common with most aspers?

From Dictionary.com:
"asper
\As"per\ ([a^]s"p[~e]r), a. [OE. aspre, OF. aspre, F. [^a]pre, fr. L. asper rough.] Rough; rugged; harsh; bitter; stern; fierce. [Archaic] ``An asper sound.'' --Bacon."
For the record, I think this is not the appropriate diminutive for us to use.

Most in common:  Feel like I live on the wrong planet, difficulty interacting with people, hypersensitive to touch, light, sound etc.
Least in common:  My obsessions don't last very long - my pattern seems to be different in that I'll have a special interest that consumes me but then I'll give it up after a short time.

Mauka is a cat who was born on the beach, abandoned by her mom at 3 weeks of age when we found her.  She doesn't do anything but sleep and eat.  We think she's neurologically damaged because of drinking salt water.

Title: Re: I'm game - what do you want to know?

Why should a sperm represent autism?  Sure, there may be a genetic factor,  however the genes for autism come from both parents.  The sperm represents the father only.  A picture of a sperm pretty much represents only one thing:  male fertility.  If there is something else it's evocative of that I'm missing, please fill me in.

You say "A struggle for life, outside the box".  I can go with that phrase, just not the symbology.  Your thoughts are impressive, but in this case, your penis is thinking too hard.

Title: Re: I'm game - what do you want to know?
Post by: McGiver on June 26, 2006, 11:11:20 PM
not necessarily.

there has been alot of discussion involving a cure.

the cure would come from the point of inception, or reducing the sperms that cause it.  the chromosome shit, that is why the sperm
and also a sperm is a struggle for life.  very few of them even achieve it.
Title: Re: I'm game - what do you want to know?
Post by: Triste on June 26, 2006, 11:18:44 PM
You do realize that as soon as you mention the word 'cure' on an AS site that you may open the door to a huge hornet's nest, right?  Oh, wait, I forgot that's your purpose in life.

Still, I hold to my opinion that a sperm is not evocative of anything but male fertility and therefore would not be a good symbol for something as complex as AS.
Title: Re: I'm game - what do you want to know?
Post by: McGiver on June 26, 2006, 11:23:33 PM
a sperm is a struggle for life, the egg, fertilized becomes life.

there is so much competition for life among sperm, yet few of them succeed.

i am against a cure.

i think a cure would do nothing more than create mindless drones, accepting of what they are told.

Is the sperm trying to get inside the box?

I have thought about this many times.  I've decided I'd have to go way back, to when I was 15 and finally gave in to peer pressure and smoked a cigarette.  If I hadn't done that, I would have not met my ex-husband, and all would be better.

And more recently, I regret filing a complaint with the EEOC about my last job.  I got shafted, and not just because I am now jobless and having a hard time finding a job in a small town.  I also wonder about whether going into nursing was the right path.  I'm actually applying to work as a nurse at both the local county jail and state prison, because you don't have to smile at the inmates and I can be brusque, as is my nature.

I was quiet, shy, insecure, especially about my appearance.  The social aspects were mind-boggling.  I didn't fit in anywhere.  I did well in school despite falling in with the stoners and doing every drug put before me.  I also practiced ballet at the time, which didn't really fit into the stoner stereotype.  I was, and still am, a fish out of water in whatever situation.  My mother, who is an aspie, never talked to me, was hostile, and unseeing of how troubled I was.  I had no other family, nobody to turn to for help.  Not that I knew at the time that I needed help, of course.

I believed that if I could just get away from my house, after high school, that I would be successful in life.  So I had some hope.

I've had anhedonia ever since I can remember, which sucks, and I still haven't figured out how to deal with that.  Is there an anhedonia bulletin board, I wonder?

So now I have teenagers of my own, and I wish it could be easier for them than it was for me.  Even though they don't have AS, they've been subject to the difficulties brought on by me and my inability to deal with the world, as well as by their father, who is an alcoholic and smokes crack and hasn't had a job in the 10 years since I left him.  Poor choice on my part - I was only 19 when I met him.

Speaking of help, I just today decided that we need help.  So this morning I called the local support services office, requesting a case manager for me and the kids.  I'm at home waiting by the phone to hear back from them.  I have hope that they can help us out.  We'll see, but I am going to try to advocate for us as best as I can, given my limited functioning at this point.

It was January 2005.  I was 41.  I was surfing the internet and came upon a description of AS.  It was an epiphany for me, an "Aha!" moment.  I knew immediately that this was the explanation for everything.

How long did you do ballet for? (i did it for a while when i was really young, thought about getting back into a while ago but well had other things i needed to do more)

Did finding out you had AS make any major difference to you and your life?

Thanks, HG.  I did ballet from age 9 to 19.  I switched to yoga a while back which I like better.

Yes it has made a major difference.  The biggest thing is knowing I'm not alone.  I felt like an alien and couldn't understand why I couldn't understand people.  Knowing there's an explanation for this, and that others have this problem, has been very liberating.

No religion whatsoever.  Was buddhist for a while and believed in karma, but after all the crap that has happened to me and seeing how unfair life is to myself and others, I have serious doubts about it.

I am somewhat envious of people who have faith.  It's not something you can just summon up at will.  People with faith seem to be stronger and happier.

However, I have negative opinions about religion in general, in part because of the millions of people tortured and killed over the years in the name of someone's god.  Oh, you didn't ask me that last question, but since people are so bored, I thought I'd try to mix it up a bit.  Nobody's probably going to read this anyway.

Correction:  I'm a nurse and am going to grad school in the fall.  So that makes me a MILF and a NILF.  I'm flattered.  But I have a daughter who is more naturally endowed than me, so that makes me somewhat more modest.

What are you up to today?
Trying to avoid panic.  Went to the orthopedic surgeon who is sending me for an MRI of my shoulder to find out whether I need surgery.  Trying to deal with the insurance company to pay for it.  Phone calls and doctor visits - fun.  Just made a flight reservation to Honolulu for my grad school orientation next month - I can't wait to be a student again!  I have to leave in a few minutes to take my daughter to her last behind-the-wheel driving class - halellujah - we survived the 50 hours of hell and are actually getting along better now.  Have to go to the bank to get her 50 hour driving log notarized, return an overdue library book, register the kid's new car at DMV, go to the post office to pick up the keys to my new post office box that we've been waiting for for a year, then help the girls pack for a camping trip.
Too much to do, all dealing with the public, just taking it one moment at a time.

What is it like living on a island?
The ocean is always close by and the weather is almost always good so we can go to the beach and go snorkeling any time we want.  It's a rural island so if we want to enjoy city life we have to get on a plane and fly to Honolulu, which we do every so often.  There are a lot of "local" people here and a culture all its own, which can sometime make social stuff even more complicated.  There's not many people on the island, so everybody knows everybody's business, which can be intimidating, kind of like living in a small town.  Some things are really expensive because of transportation costs.  Mail takes forever to get here from the mainland so I've had to give up my Ebay addiction, which is probably just as well.  Everything is very casual - no dressing up, and there isn't the same pressure to have "stuff" like there was back in California.  Hawaiians value relaxation and having fun more than possessing things, which I like.  But the radio stations suck and without TV I sometimes feel cut off from the rest of the world, which is good and bad.

triste,

Do you think that a persons feelings are real?

Do you think that others should validate the fact that others feelings are real?

My meds started kicking in, a side effect of which was to remove all unhealthy obsessions from my brain.  Then, while getting screwed, my back injury kicked up again, and I was unable to sit for longer than it took to eat a meal.  Got rolfed this morning by my studly Minnesotan, and now I can almost sit again.

The rolfing was fun.  Almost as good as sex.

I just watched "The Talented Mr. Ripley", where Matt Damon plays a sociopath with identity issues.  Great movie.  Normally I would say yes, people's feelings are real, but as I become less naive I see there are those among us who are so hidden even from themselves that they may not even know if their feelings are real.

In terms of validation, that should come from the appropriate person.  Like a significant other.

That is the west side of the island I live on (Hawaii).  I live 2 hours from there  ;D
We crash the hotel sometimes so the kids can swim in the pool.

I love pictures.  This one hardly looks like what you'd expect of Hawaii.  It's a pic of the road we'll be taking, the saddle between two 13000 foot volcanoes (all that rocky stuff is lava):

By all means, come join me and my two teenagers in one room!  But I don't know that you'd want to be flying out of England right now.  I just got an email from an airline that said they're not allowing any liquids on board airplanes except for breastmilk and insulin.  Scary.

I really like your avatar, Kevv.  Nice detailing and the colors are nice too.

Just got back from the orthopedic surgeon, who showed me pictures (taken during the surgery last week) of my labrum (piece of tissue holding the shoulder together) which was really cool.  He told me I have 3 titanium screws holding it all together now.

I wonder if I'll get through airport security now..."Of course I don't have a gun on me, I have 3 titanium screws in my labrum"

Did the doctor give you a card to show at the airport?  My mom got a card to show at the airport when she got an artificial shoulder.  My daughter has steel wires holding her sternum together and she usually does not set off the metal detectors in airports, although she did once.  I explained that she had open heart surgery when she was a baby.  She flatly refused to let them come near her with the hand scanner and it was before September 11, IIRC, so they just let her walk back through it carefully and she did not set it off that time.  Be careful to walk through the center and I think that helps.

think we should all establish a time (within the next week or so), and have a drunken chat conversation, with several members of I² participating.

shots every ten minutes and a cold beer always in hand (or wine).

we can name a designated log saver, who will post the declining results of the entire session.  that way, the next day, we can all use the blushing emoticon, frequently.

and, we should remember that this is Intensity².  so no holds barred.

also, clothing is optional.

who would be interested in this?

perhaps next sunday between 10pm and midnight british time.

that means i would be drinking by about two in the afternoon.

next sunday sept 18.  would you be interested?

Thanks for asking Kevv.  Still depressed and in pain.  I have physical therapy 3 times a week, and my surgeon's handing me out pain meds like they're candy.  Gotta watch that I don't get addicted to them, too.

I have to do some things today I hate doing - phone calls I don't want to make and paying bills, so I'll probably stop by the corner store later for some liquid courage.

Wow, your incisions are healing nicely, Triste.  The topography might smooth out over time, don't you think?  It did on my daughter's sternotomy incision.

Were they able to fix everything with just those two little incisions?  That is so amazing to me that they can do that in some cases.

i have scars all over the place, from all sorts of things.  after a while, i forgot they were there, to be honest.  and no-one ever mentions them, not even out of curiosity.

Thanks for asking, everyone.
PT started a week after surgery.  I have 2 scars on front of shoulder, and one behind.
I've been in agony without percocet until today.  That stuff makes me crazy, which is why I haven't been here.  Can't remember much of the last 2 weeks, actually.  If I said anything stupid, please excuse me.

I can't lift anything over 5 pounds for FOUR MONTHS which means I basically can't work as a nurse.  I'm trying to figure out what to do but I'm stymied.
