Title: Living situations
Post by: Tesla on November 12, 2007, 09:07:12 PM
I'm just curious.  Do you rent or own where you live?  Do you live in a detached dwelling or shared in someway?

People in the UK:  Are most dwelling units connected in some way?  Are detached homes rare or just real expensive...  ?

I was looking at homes in the UK and almost everything is "semi-detached" or "community owned".  What does that mean?  You share walls with people?

Renting in a unit complex, each unit is self contained and not connected to the other units except via the garages.

i live in a semi detached with my mum, stepdad and brothers.

most here (in the uk) are semi detached, but there are quite a lot of detached houses too. usually in middle class suburbs, as theyre more expensive.
semi detached just means one side of your house is attached to the other side of the house next door.

Always rented, since I moved out.
I hate the idea of having to take
care of a house.

Rented - I share one wall and a ceiling with the neighbours.

It's sad not being able to play music at the volume I'd like, but also convenient, because for some bizarre reason, the heating is built into the ceiling (my ceiling, the neighbours' floor) and there are no vents. So whenever they have their heat on, I don't have to, because it comes right through.

Semi-detached with my mum, who owns it.  I can hear the neighbours moving around at night.

my bedrooms an extension above the garage on the other side of my house, so there are no people on the other side of my walls which is good, it means its quieter and i can play music loud.

I see.  I've always called a semi-detached house a duplex.

This is my wife and I's home.  Really need to kill the algae growing on the roof.  :)

Heh. I'm used to leaching it off my
neighbor's below. If I lived on top of
you, you'd have to turn it on, or freeze.

i own my house.  (well, the mortgage company owns some of it).  it's a 2 (officially, more like 3-4) bedroom mid-terrace house with a biggish garden, over a century old.

there's a wide variety of different house styles, so i'd disagree that most houses are semi's.  i'd say that terraces are more common than semi's, to be hojnest, but it depends on where you live - semi's tend to be in more affluent areas (except where they were built after the damage caused by the bombing in the first and second world wars, cos a lot of local council-owned property is seemi-detached, in that case).

i suspect that "community-owned" means council-owned, and therefore rented accomodation.  there are also housing associations, private landlords and various other permutations.  i'd imagine that it's similar in the states.

seems that brits are more into having a garden, though - i know some countries in europe favour flats (apartments, to you) and renting over owning a property and having a garden.  "watching the english" by kate fox has some interesting stuff on that sort of thing.

I live in a house which my husband and I should own in about 20 years.

Before that, we lived in a rented fourplex, on one end, so we had only one common wall with a neighbor.

no, I highly doubt you'd be able to get dna from semen that's been in a shower drain though

I did jerk in the shower when I had a roommate.

I live in  a small 4 bedroom 2 bath house it's not attached but on the sides the other houses are only about twenty five feet away.  We own it along with the bank
It's on one third of an acre.  We built the second floor about five years ago because of our growing family.

They make zinc strips that install along the ridge of the house that will prevent it from growing I don't know if it will make the current stains go away though

You'd get plenty of DNA.  The hard part would be separating the sperm DNA from the DNA from skin cells and other sources, but I doubt it would be that difficult.  Just find a reasonably intact sperm cell, rinse it off, mash it up and replicate the DNA in it until you have enough to work with.

Live with my mom and two brothers, in a small but cozy apartment. It's hard to find housing in Stockholm, so I guess it'll be when I have a job and all.

We live in a four bedroom end back-to-back terrace house on three floors, we own some of it, the bank owns some of it, and assorted cunts I owe money have dibs on bits of it if we sell it. We share a back wall with the old lady in the street behind us and a wall with a neighbour to one side since this is an end house. its a bit of a ballache only having the (decent sized) living room and small kitchen downstairs, but thats what kids bedrooms are for.  >:D No yard unfortunately. We're trying to get an allotment plot to rent so we can grow some veggies.

What's a terrace house?  I've been seeing those a lot lately too.
