Post by: jman on September 03, 2007, 06:33:59 PM
Lets see I have my desktop:

AMD Sempron
512 mb RAM
80 gig Hard Drive
Nvidia Geforce
wifi
two DVD/CD bunrers (one is USB)
running PClinuxOS 2007

My Home Server:

This is a computer my boss gave me I decided to turn into a server:

It's a celeron I think about 800 mhz
160 gig hard drive
512 megs RAM
also running PClinuxOS however no GUI (adminstration is done via [ur=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webminlwebmin][/url]
It provides the following services:

Media Server: I stream my my music from my work via a web applcation called jinzora also I use something called twonkymedia to stream music and video down to my xbox 360, though you have to buy it, it;s worth it.

File Server: My two Windows XP machines profiles are stored on the server fo consistency throughout the house and file sharing.

My sister's machine:

HP pavilion Celeron 800 mhz
256 megs ram
onboard intel video
wifi
cd bunrer/dvd rom
Windows XP

Parents/family machine:
Pentium III 1.0 ghz
Windows XP
An older Ati card
wifi
384 megts RAM

My laptop (got this off ebay for 150 bucks: came with a carrying case, wifi card, network card, dial up modem, and WIndows 2000 Service Pack 4

The specs are pretty ancient but it works for me:
Dell latitude
300 mhz
128 megs RAM
Windows 2000 Service pack 4
cd/dvd drive
One USB part surprisingly

my other laptop, this one was givien to me by my boss but the keyboard is broken and it has no hard drive :(
It's a Dell Insprion with a pentium III
256 megs RAM
onbaord LAN and modem
and a docking station

Who else here is a geek like me show off your specs

We have 4.  Hell if I know the techie details.  Mordok orders the parts and builds them, I just play with them.

1.) Mordok's desktop.  Often highjacked by the boy child since he figured out it runs faster than...
2.) the kids machine, which as far as I know was cobbled together out of scavenged parts from our older machines.
3.) The file server.  We store crap on here.  Lots of crap.  Also, the printer has to be routed through this box for some reason.
4.) My computer.  It's got a really cool flat screen monitor and a wireless mouse and keyboard.   We added extra memory when I started playing WoW.  Um...yeah, that's about all I know.

4 of them. The two that work are my Toshiba notebook with a 1.73 Ghz Centrino Duo that I'm currently using,

A Dell desktop system that has a 500 Mhz P3 in it. It currently has the last free release of Red Hat Linux on it, RH9.

I also have a Athlon XP 1.5 Ghz box that will work when I put drives in it, and my old mainstay Compaq 1Ghz Athlon mobile notebook that is pretty much fucked at this point.

Too many. Stretching back to a Radio Shack TRS-80 4k
(still runs). But, in my defense, some were gotten for
free from one of my schools.

My New Del Dimension PC with Windows XP that I am very happy with
and my old HP Pavilion PC which is such a piece of crap that the internet won't work on it anymore.

I don't know all the technical crap either

I do though.  :eyebrows:

My PC - Compaq Evo Pentium 4 2.4GHz, 768MB DDR RAM, 80GB HDD + 40GB HDD, DVD-RW, newish NVidia GeForce card (not yet fitted due to laziness so still using Intel 845 Extreme Graphics chipset), PCLinuxOS 2007 + Windows XP

PI's laptop - Hi-Grade Notino Celeron 2GHz, 256MB RAM, 30GB HDD, DVD-ROM/CDRW, Windows XP

Kids PC - Celeron 1.2GHz, 256MB RAM, 20GB HDD, Intel 810 graphics chipset, CD-ROM and external CDRW, Windows XP

and my old box - eMachines Celeron 900MHz, 256MB RAM, 20GB HDD, optical drive missing, Windows XP. Currently being cannibalised for usable bits.

The now ancient desktop I built about 4 years back, an old laptop, another tech challenged (slow as hell) desktop, 4 or 5 laying around in the basement found curbside or taken in trades I need to strip, a bin full of parts I'll probably never use.

Way, way too many.

3 kind of.

Main:  3 Ghz P4 with 2GB of DDR RAM
HD1: 160 GB
HD2: 60 GB
HD3: 17 GB
ATI Radeon 9600 pro 128MB VRAM
WinXP
Sound Blaster 5.1 sound card
2 DVD burners both internal

Backup POS:  2 Ghz Athlon XP with 1GB RAM
HD: 60 GB
ATI Radeon 9600 128 MB VRAM
Win XP
50x CDROM (lol)
External USB soundcard with MIDI inputs and 5.1 (forgot brand...)

Laptop:  Dell Latitude with P3 ??? Mhz 256 MB RAM
WinXP, CD ROM, Wireless PCMCIA card, floppy, 15 inch display

Oh and I have 2 17 inch monitors that are CRT (one does 1600 by 1200 wooo!).   I want to get LCDs that do 720p/1080p eventually.   Sometime whenever a great DX10 only game comes out I will get a multicore beast system with a DX10 video card and all (16x PCI Express slots running 2 SLI graphics cards haha).

I got my upgrade last - I got it in January off eBay for ninety quid and beefed it up with some stuff I already had. PI has had her laptop nearly three years, and it is considerably higher spec than my old box - which was PI's before mine, I had a 600MHz Celeron with 64MB RAM running Windows 98SE before that.  ::)

Thats a pretty good deal, £90 for all that. Was the Celeron 600 like working with a cripple?

Like I said, I beefed it up with some stuff I already had. The Celeron 600 was ok when I got it seven years ago, but wasnt powerful enough to run XP or any recent software. I dropped it off for recycling a couple of months ago.

Could you not use it as a file server or something useful then? I still have a PIII, and it runs XP like a dream.

Nah, I had no practical application for it. It was too old to be economic to upgrade and had too little RAM to be useful for most applications.

I suppose loading it up with more RAM would have cost more than the PC. MY PIII has 512 meg in it, in fact it is just as good at most basic tasks as my lappie, if not quicker because its almost empty.

Let's see...

My desktop, a 5-yo PC (P4 2.5GHz) running Debian Linux and WinXP for games. Nice 21" LCD monitor, though, and a reasonably fresh nVidia card for the graphics.

My wife's work laptop (a dual-core something Dell). Win XP Pro. Technically it's not ours and i don't have to admin it. Thankfully.

My age-old steam-powered Dell laptop (P3 750MHz) running WinXP Pro. I used to have Debian on another HDD but that disk passed away, sadly.

The kids' pooter, a 3.4(?)GHz dual-core PC. Win XP, fresh install (earlier today, in fact). Nice, big LCD and an ATi graphics card.

A Sun UltraSparc II (dual processor) server running Debian. Lots of memory, lots of HDDs. Makes a lot of noise.

An age-old SunSparc V running Red Hat 6. Makes a lot of noise, too.

A P133 PC running Win95, used only for sound analysis.

And of course, I have a couple of older PCs (some of them even work) and one Amiga 500 (that does work).

Post by: DirtDawg on September 04, 2007, 08:30:42 PM
I don't really have geeky computers. I have three that I have thrown together.

My main one is an old Soyo Dragon board, with RAID, AMD XP2400, 2GB RAM*, WinXP Pro, 300 and 400 GB HDDs pairs, M-Audio sound, Radeon 9800XT 256 MB graphics card, Plextor CD-R, Sony DVD, Universal card reader. It was basically my work box, before I lost my job. Set up for loading photos from the camera shoots and burnig, I had Photoshop, CorelDraw, Nero and a few other graphics aps, but not much else in it. I have now moved all my graphics shit to my newer box and this one has almost no software in it, except for internet, Winamp and fractal stuff. I have my good stereo stuff hooked up to it.

Newest computer is similar, but I used an ASUS P4P8X, P4 2.8GHz, 2Gb RAM, Win XP Pro (cracked, not connected), Radeon 9800 PRO, same CD burner, 160GB HDD, all my graphics software, but nothing music or internet related on this one. I just use it for graphics, so it basically has all possible Windows services turned off and it fucking flies compared to the other one.

Last is another Soyo board, 900MHz P3, 512MB Ram, 80GB HDD, ATI Wonder 7800 64 MB graphics, Audigy Sound card, Win ME. I only use it for the kids educational DOS games, these days.

I do have a working antique, that I haven't tossed out, yet. It's an old Compaq 486 DXII, 25MHz, with 32MB RAM 600MB HDD. :D It works fine, but it has its hands full booting Win95. It was my dad's and he paid an extra thousand dollars to get the 600MB HDD, instead of the 200MB!!

My only claim to geekdom is that I have over seventy five thousand songs ripped to disk.

Actually, I just looked - it's 78,356 songs I can access with my mouse.

*I forgot, I pulled a faulty stick of RAM out of this one. It's now got 1GB.

It's surprising that so many, like me, are using such out of date stuff. I think I like that. We are getting the most out of what we have, instead of buying the newest flashy thing all the time.

Can't help drooling over GA's machine though.

I don't really care how up to date my system is as long as it can cope with the stuff I like to do- I only need a machine that allows me to surf the net, run IM, listen to music and write smut (and occasionally play the sims).  My only complaint was that it won't run the sims 2, but I just borrow Dunc's machine when I want to play that.

Exactly! My interest is in stillls and rendering time, I have plenty of, since I have the dedicated machine that carrries out tasks when I'm not watching.

Even surfing on dial-up is not the much problem, because I have so many constannt distractions. My old shit works OK for noww.

Welll, it will after I replace this fucking drifty mouse!!!

Yes, it's frustrating, sometimes, but I use a flash blocker.
I do online banking, bill paying and transfers between accounts and investments and the security protocols take fucking forever! At least with Firefox the timeouts are salvageable, though.

I'll fix that when I get a job.

I agree, unfortunately, I want to get into video editing, graphics, and 3D modelling...Need a high-end machine for that.
Not to mention lots of gaming?  :)

But of course ;)
Crysis is going to rock!

That's perfectly understandable- you need a machine that will cope with the tasks you need to do on it.

Exactly! My interest is in stillls and rendering time, I have plenty of, since I have the dedicated machine that carrries out tasks when I'm not watching.

Even surfing on dial-up is not the much problem, because I have so many constannt distractions. My old shit works OK for noww.
Dial up is a nuisance though, given all the crap that people have to put in their websites these days.

When I was on Dial Up I could download 11gb per month, consistently.
On my connection I coud do 200GB without too much complaint.

Athlon XP barton 2500+ overclocked to 3200+ (2.2GHz), Abit NF7-S motherboard, 2x256mb Corsair RAM @ 2-3-3-6, Powercolor 9600xt bravo (Radeon 128mb 9600xt VIVO), Seagate SATA 120G + 320G, erm.... Antec 1080AMG + Antec 430W 'trupower' PSU, Dust bunnies, fans with gay red leds and a really gay red cold-cathode which is actually pink. Runs WinXP pro SP2.

Was originally built as a gaming rig.
Now it is a porn hunter.

I built a killer rig for my bro earlier this year, forget what components exactly but it's good. Pentium 4million triggerhertz or something.

The pc sitting next to mine is a P3 1Ghz running Win98. Still remarkably reliable yet seldom used. Basically a backup.

My mother and sister have lappies, dad seems to have access to lappies from work and the gimp chained up in my dungeon has a Mac.

I have several scrap PCs in my room. I'm goin to make a suit of armour from the obsolete circuit boards.

Oh those connections are brilliant, asides you have to use a phone line for the upstream.

The latency sucks though if you're into online gaming.

... but support?  It works OK. You get the problems immediately, and take your time with their solutions.

Downloading music, it kicks ass!

I quite agree that it's awesome for those things.  I was just pointing out that it's not a perfect solution for every situation.

I've borrowed my dad finance's notebook which is a Pentium M 1.8 GHZ with 512 MB of RAM, a 40 GB hard drive and DVD ROM. The Graphics card is only 16 MB, means all I do is surf the internet and do word processing. I used to have a P4 2GHZ, with 512MB of RAM, 40GB Hard Drive, DVD Dual Layer Burner and Windows XP Home, but I gave that to my dad's finance's son.

I will get in the near future a old Duron, Celeron or Pentium 3 system with 256MB of RAM to run Debian Etch with KDE on it.

I managed to buy myself a Celeron 1.1ghz box with 256 MB of RAM recently and installed Debian Etch with XFCE on it.

What about connections?

We were lucky enough to get NBN (National Broadband Network) early compared to many people in our area. It's fibre to the premises and it is great. Kayleigh can download an average tv episode in 6 minutes.

We have fibre, too. Finally got it last summer.

Good isn't it?

How did it change from what you had before?

Even using Wi-Fi, the speed is excellent. Just the thing for an impatient person!

I have one non-working HP Pavillion with Windows XP.

One working Dell...something. With Windows 2000.

One working Dell Latitude with broken screen. Windows 7, very happy with it.

An iPad Air. The sturdiest computer I've ever owned. It really takes hits when I get frustrated with it.

My mobile I would consider a computer.

I want another laptop as a spare...just a cheap one I suppose. They all seem to stop working in the end. Might get a refurbished business laptop as they're a lot sturdier and seem to last longer.

We had VDSL before. Good but the bandwidth was poor. The kids streaming when I had a Skype conference was a no-no. Money well spent.

The oldest computer I have left is an Amiga 500 in mint condition. Almost as old is a 386 laptop with an LCD B/W screen. I don't want to get rid of either of them.

3 laptops (one ancient for dos games), 1 notebook, 2 desktops, and the behemoth in the kid's room for gaming.

We've cut down. :M
