Title: Workplace woes? Balance them out
Post by: Mr Smith on July 06, 2007, 09:40:39 PM
I'm sure many people can name what sucks about their job, I mean, it's a job afterall. You get paid for it because no-one in their right mind would do it for free. What would one expect?

However

What do you LIKE about your job? Even if it's just that tiny little thing that makes it worthwhile more often or not?

If money wasn't an issue, I'd still do my job, except I'd do it for me instead of someone else.

I'm blessed to be doing work I enjoy.

As much as my job really isn't very cool, I like the fact that I get along with pretty much everyone, meet heaps of new people (A large business with a high turnover of staff), and have loads of laughs.

A high turnover rate is usually a bad sign, unless that's the norm in your industry.

What kind of work do you do??  What does your company do??

Yeah, I know. It's a really shit job, no-one wants to stay - It's the norm there. But knowing cool people for a short time, then meeting more is always a plus. I'm waitressing part time at the moment while I study.

Waiting tables has a high turnover rate, just the nature of the beast. It's an OK job when you're in your 20's. Don't be like my older brother and still be doing it when you're 40 though.  ;)

Oh, and one more thing. Don't be like your co-workers and blow all your money going out to bars. Thats what my brother did. He's 43 and lives paycheck to paycheck.  :-\

Luckily i'm not much of a fan of the taste of ethanol. My co-workers smoke and go to the pub lots, but I'm sweet with that. I might have a few drinks, then just have splits rather than spirits.

I've had to be a parent to my older (8 years) brother for about a dedcade now. I had a girlfriend who was in the F&B Industry and currently have a fuckbuddy in the F&B industry. I know what these people are like. They blow all their tip money in bars.

To answer your question........ yes.

Daddy is being serious today, isn't he?

I dated a chef once.  Yes, I know what you mean.   Fatty's too sensible for that anyway.

the only problem with my job is that sometimes other people compete with me for it.  but that problem will be resolved in a little over two months time.

other than that, there is nothing to bitch about.  my job is great, and i am in total control.

The good bit is not having some wanker with half my brain being paid twice what I make breathing down my neck. The bad bit is not being able to work. I don't glory in being 'on the sick'. Excuse the pun, I'm fucking pig sick of it. I'd much rather be fit for work. >:(

^I don't know what has happened.

I like working in a small area by myself and I don't have a supervisor to answer to - there is no one there.

I don't get paid for the work I do, but I do get bitched at in the kitchen -- a lot.

EDIT: I really don't get Hale_Bopp sometimes.

Hmmmm things I like about my job:

1. My cubicle is bigger than everyone else's

2. My boss is cool as hell, he's so laid back.

3. I get to use linux and mess with other technologies I've never messed with.

4. I get a bigger  monitor than everyone else's

5. Great Benefits once my 3 months probation is up

6. The company buys everyone lunch every Friday.

My "real" work is in music. I made lots of money in photography (401K and all that, too) and I enjoyed that also, but I don't do it for free, except for friends. Making music with my friends (acquaintances, really - obsessed musicians are as hard to know as auties)  is more enjoyable than anything else I have known and anytime I have the opportunity, I go do "my work", with or without pay. The technical end of live music performance is THE one pursuit where I am totally confident and undaunted by any challenges. I own it!

Recently, I had the chance to work with a group of jazz musicians from a university at a big Jazz Festival, locally. As things worked out with my adult son who I had not yet met, the meet-up fell on the weekend of the fest. I had to cancel and fortunately I did it early enough to keep that bridge from catching fire. It ripped me up to abandon a chance to make music, even though I am "just the techie", and not a stage musician. I care nothing for the stage. I want to be behind the scenes, anyway, but I can make or break any band with my in-depth knowledge of acoustics, equipment, etc. as those are my lifelong studies, paid or not - doesn't matter.

I wish for everyone to find a lifelong interest.

I'm happy working for an independent company, which I haven't had the opportunity to do before, and because my boss is very cool and leaves me about my business. Also, I never have to deal with shitty customers/assholes because people are generally happy to see me when I get there.

Getting to wreck people's trucks with his crane when they've pissed him off must be one.

the freedom.

i work when i feel like it.  i don't get paid if i don't pick up a job, but if i wake up and don't feel like working then i just stay home.

for instance:  a couple years ago i decided to learn how to do manly things.  i decided that i wanted to learn to do home repairs.

so i didn't bother showing up for work for a few months.  instead i bought books and tore up my kitchen.  i repiped my whole house.  i rewired my whole house.  installed cabinets and tile, drywall etc.  now i know how.

the best part of my job is the freedom.  i took a few months off and when i decided to come back i did and started back up, right where i left off.

It is a rare job that waits for you. Don't let it go.

another thing about my job is, well, the freedom.

if i am not on a comeback, then i check in by phone at the dispatch hall.
then i go down there and choose one of a several hundred job categories at about 3 dozen seperate companies.
if i get there and don't like it, then i can always call a replacement.  but i usually enjoy the money more than a crappy day of work, so i never reep out.

I work on a farm for $10 an hour It's summer right now and its hot as fuck in the middle of the field.
i like it though the pay is pretty fair it's higher than minimum wage the people i work with have a scene of humor
the guy who owns the farm constantly farts while he works and he says "It's farm life, get used to it, you should see that cow over there."
Yes and theres a very cute steer. A steer is a male cow with no balls. He's very nice and cute, he longs for attention and moo's while i'm working.

I have another job where I sweep up garbage theres like a million cigarette butts everywhere and people in their cars get angry and impatient at me when I am doing great service at minimum wage. The shop owners like it because part of my job is to sweep in front of stores they smile and tell me how much they appreciate it, one guy who owns the sushi place gave me a can of manderan orange juice he said "Here your working hard, you deserve it, have a drink on me" Thats the good part but it it sucks because it's summer right now and the cars and impatient people have increased because where I live is a popular tourist town and the fat people in ugly fuck clothes throw around all the shit they feel like. They are lucky that New-Age Hippie people like me don't believe in violence otherwise all the country bumpkin people I know, we would gang up and ride tractors and throw shit at them literally and drive them over for treating our only planet like a trash can. The tourists have an attitude like "Oh we don't live here, putting garbage in the trashcan won't benefit us anyways some smelly lice infested hippie will clean it up for us" ASSHOLES!
