Title: Hi! My name is…
Post by: Trigger 11 on January 07, 2025, 09:23:00 PM
How is everybody? I have been overwhelmed with medical appointments and finally getting the diagnosis and prognosis that there is nothing they can do. So I have decided to move forward and finish my life goals. I am back in school working on my PhD in Astrophysics. Back going to a lot of live concerts. Took my Son across the country to the No Values Festival at the Pomona Fairplex in Orange County, co-headlined by Social Distortion and the Misfits (Son’s favorite band). It was a blast, but very hard on my body. Took over a week to recuperate.

I've been doing okay... just going through a weird cycle of grief since my Father was killed almost 2 years ago... other than that, I'm trying to move forward with my life and see where to go next.

Hi Trigger! :)

Iirc, you had neck and back pain? It's probably more complicated than that though.

It's good to see you again. I'm awed at the astrophysics PhD.

What kind of astrophysics?

What kind of astrophysics?

Right now I am working through classes.

Computational Astrophysics (mostly Python)
Astrophysical Process (from classical to quantum, with applications)
High Energy Astrophysics
Advanced Astrophysics Research Methods (we will be working with real data from SDSS, JWST, etc.)
Interstellar Medium (everything not stars, galaxies, or dark matter)

I am trying to figure out where I want to do research. Past research was on planetary science, but may look into simulations on protaplanetary disks in newly formed star systems.

I hope you will get paid. :)

I was going to do my PhD on stellar physics. Loved that. Of course, this is almost 40 years ago now, and a lot has happened in the field. I've tried to keep abreast of what's going on but it's just too much.

A friend of mine does exoplanet research in Chile. Their antenna is one of the few that found an exoplanet optically.

The downside of working in astrophysics is that you won't get rich. Not even close. You might travel the world to wherever the grants you get take you, or you might become a professor at a uni doing mostly not astrophysics. At least if you live in these parts of the world.
