So in London we have Soho which is where people typically go to gather and drink. That's just what they did last night for the first time in months and now we have all the post on social media 'I'm so disappointed in these people' 'this makes me so sad' as if all those people will be dead in a fortnight, or all of their grandparents will die. Its patent nonsense. These are the same critics who believe BLM protests cannot spread Coronavirus (because its such a politically aware virus). The simple fact is that these people just want to control others behaviour, they are narcissists. They want to determine what reasons you should gather for and when you should stay home.
All the things that will 'cause a second spike' will be the things we enjoy; drinking, socialising, having fun (healthy normal things that don't cause sickness)
All the things that 'are fine' will be race baiting, attacking private property, hurting people (because why not, its 2020).

however, without measures like Lockdown, it's pretty certain that covid-19 would cause a lot more deaths than the annual flu toll, and that this would be in addition to the annual flu toll. The fear was that NHS would fail to cope. Yeah, I know. I know it fails to cope every single sodding Winter ; patients are left waiting on trolleys in hospital corridors etc; but to fail even worse than that would have sent the death toll right through the roof, laid horribly bare the defciencies in the nHS, and we'd all have completely lost confidence in the government. From which POV it's almost a pity that disaster has been averted thus far, isn't it?

The UK has paid a high price for not taking COVID-19 seriously enough early on.

It does seem to like some peoples genetics better than others, I have seen a few stories where it killed multiple people in one family but other ones, as in my case my son who lives at my house had what would be considered a mild case but nobody else had any symptoms what so ever. We even quarantined two weeks after he had no more symptoms and got a negative test.

Very often they are living in the same households. Or living in care facilities where young, fit and healthy people work. Or buying their food at the same supermarkets that young, fit and healthy people shop at.
Also, just because young, fit and healthy people are less likely to die, doesn't mean that a bout of COVID-19 is consequence free. Permanently reduced lung function, multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, and likely more that we don't know about yet.

Massive disruptions to our way of life are almost inevitable. You CAN be held responsible for irresponsible behaviour.
Somebody ate a bat. Or kissed a pangolin. Or dropped a test tube. Or something like that. We don't know for sure. It wasn't a crime, they didn't know that the virus would mutate and start spreading person-to-person.
The difference is that WE KNOW that there is a virus in circulation that DOES spread person-to-person and that DOES kill people and that HAS caused at least half a million confirmed deaths AND massive financial and social hardship and impacts to mental health. As such it IS irresponsible to engage in activities where you are likely to catch and further spread the virus.

well its all relative really. I feel succesful relative to my family. I've never been in a psych ward for a start. But I've actually achieved and built things from scratch, drawing on left and right brain skills. Obviously I am highly creative and I understand natural language. But I can write computer code too. And when you show up in the interview room and prove that, you don't have to lead an uncomfortable life anymore, trust me.

Problem with a fair amount of conspiracy theories is that there is a small nugget of truth, just with layers of bullshit around it to make said nugget seem more sinister than it actually is. This can catch you out if you're not careful, as they can seem more "sensical" due to these nuggets.
For example, with covid, there was an attempt by the Chinese government to initially cover it up, but people added shite to it like China invented it, how 5G towers could spread it because China helped make the tech behind it etc.
If stuff like media awareness/critical thinking skills was taught at school (as in how to recognise what is/isn't a good source, healthy scepticism etc), maybe it would help people be more aware of what is/isn't factual and become less susceptible to bullshit. I'd argue it should be essential to do so, especially in this day and age, due to the fact that a lot of content on the internet is frankly a torrent of shit that has no basis in reality, and has already done a massive amount of harm in today's society (if you want a prime example of that, look at the Brexit campaign and how a massive misinformation campaign on Facebook played a pivotal role in it).

I had covid months before the lockdown even started: 2 days in bed with a fever and 3 weeks of severe bowel pain after that. Bowel pain wasn't recognised as a symtpom until 4-5 months after I experienced it.

I was in so much pain I couldn't work I excused myself to go to the doctors. I had to go about 3 times and they couldn't help me, the pain subsided in the end. It was on par with a dental abscess.

I'd say that it's a case of randomness. Most people only get mild symptoms, and hopefully you would be one of those people. Something like 20% of people get severe symptoms and if you have other health issues that put you at risk, then being in that 20% is more risky.
In the case of Butterflies, it may well be that out of the 4 people she mentioned, it was fortunate that the severe symptoms hit the person who was strong enough to fight it off.
You are in WA, there are very few places (if any) on Earth that are safer to be right now.

We never tried the herd immunity approach, we went into lockdown as soon as we had a few cases. The nationwide lockdown was a success.
One state is now seeing the virus spread rapidly. Victoria. Some states have virtually eliminated the virus and Victoria is likely to see its state borders closed for the foreseeable future.
There is no room for complacency and this is far from over. I think there is a light at the end of the tunnel but it will be a multi-pronged solution. Masks, vaccine (hopefully), anti-viral treatments, changes to how we live and work and travel.

If you are sensible then you want to get a blood test from your doctor and not just take the pills, but I'm more than happy to experiment on myself.
When I embarked on the experiments I was leading a lifestyle in a latitude that made vitamin D sufficiency an impossibility (same for many people). So it didn't feel like a huge risk.

that just goes to show how insanely hard you have to try to poison yourself yourself with Vitamin D, as compared wih most other substances.
Can't recall all the figures, now, but looked into this pretty thouroughly awhile back, after being found deficient in vit D, and put onto a stupendous amount (by injection) to make good the deficiency. Now that I've ben thrown back on own resources , and it next-to-impssble to find suitble formulations, the question of suitable dosage arose. There's a ridicousdly wide margin of error with this one, so you might as well err towards excess, as most of the available supplements actually do. This helps make up for any absorprtion issues.
I've found the Mayo clinic's website to be an invaluable resource for questions like this. Authoritatative and comprehensive. Gotta plus you for quoting em. (as opposed to "random computer guy " :laugh:)

Currently on a prescription dose for vitamin D with bloodwork to see if it's working scheduled late next month. Doctor will decide at that time what dosage to use going forward. Hoping the advice is not to return to an over the counter option, since they seem to have no effect before. Supplements aren't regulated by the FDA, so there's no way to feel confident if what's purchased is even what's being sold.

You can mostly get away with untreated since you mix at relatively low volumes on studio monitors and if you are in a small room with some furniture to soak up any reverb. The bed in my room soaks up a lot of unwanted acoustics, barely any reverb at all.

I can understand that. Sometimes I even think I should stop watching this stuff in case I forget if something I heard came from a reliable source or a lunatic. But as a hobby it's too fun. All the crazy ideas that we spread have to be debunked on mainstream tv a week later, and it gives us a real sense of power to lead the news agenda like that, and to watch presenters grapple with pure insanity.
In this age of mass shadow banning and censorship and social credit, this is the last way we really have of leading the news agenda. And the fact that it works so well is why so called progressives hate it so much. They don't really want to progress anything except social credit and despotism. Used to live in a home which was built before the days of closets, so can relate. Once knew a couple who lived in a very small home. One entire wall of their living room was minimalist looking free standing wardrobe cabinets, side by side so they looked like a single unit. It provided loads of storage without impeding on the room's footprint too much, and much more visibly appealing than messy looking open shelving.

Yes, totally agree. Also racist views were mainstream at the time. So if Sanger had refused dialogue or agreement with groups who were openly racist, her audience would have been very small.
Applying 21st century sensitivities to early 20th century issues and movements needs to take those sort of considerations into account.

What questions? Rather than posting other people's videos and random ramblings, you should try to build up an argument that a) formulates whatever theory you wish to discuss, and b) backs up that theory. You know, using your own words. It's perfectly all right to reference whatever sources you think will support your views, but don't just post the sources without hints about what we're supposed to believe in.
I rarely consider a 15-minute video to be worth the effort without a sentence explaining why you posted it and what it is supposed to support or prove.

Jack is generally accommodating to take most any opposing stance for the sake of civil intelligent debate, and would have certainly taken the stance of condemning Sanger if the provided stance had instead been support. There are people with sensible things to say on both sides of the topic. Unfortunately that's not the case here.

From what I understand, Sanger's "eugenics" was simply the sane position that women should be able to make their own reproductive choices. Not just wealthy or privileged women.
Wouldn't try to deny Sanger found some matter of alignment in eugenics due to finding certain people unfit, but those views seem clearly based in economic and intellectual fitness regardless of race. It so happened to be a racist time, and while motives might not have been racist, it doesn't appear racially motivated support for contraception was rejected. Though that sort of thing occurs with many movements, even today. One organization may not reject the support of a more extreme organization which happens to serve their own agenda, even though certain extremes aren't something they promote, engage or support.
Yes, totally agree. Also racist views were mainstream at the time. So if Sanger had refused dialogue or agreement with groups who were openly racist, her audience would have been very small.
Applying 21st century sensitivities to early 20th century issues and movements needs to take those sort of considerations into account.
Thinking it may be taking that into account. Ultimately the first step in legalizing contraception meant providing it to black women first, and that will taint Sanger's legacy forever. Rightly so? Maybe.

I just don't find people making dubious claims on youtube videos "evidence". You you make a claim, you need to back it up, and need to ensure your sources are not complete shit too.
For example, I could say weed cures cancer and I back that claim up with a website that talks about it, but ultimately it would still be dubious as said website likely has not done any scientific testing or collated peer reviewed evidence to back up their claims, and expect people to believe them at face value because they want to appear like they're an "authority" on the matter. This even goes as far as claiming they're a Dr. (likely from a mail order degree mill, inflating an unrelated degree or just made it up on the spot), using scientific terminology, and if they do "tests", are likely easily falsifiable or fabricated to make whatever result agree with their claim. At no point they want things to be peer reviewed, scrutinised or questioned - they want people to blindly believe it purely on authority.
I see this all the time from people who are anti-vax, new age etc - always the same lack of critical thought or any real intelligence. As the saying goes, having an open mind is fine... but not too open that your brain falls out!

My anti vaccination stance is based on science though, because the science puts me at a very low risk for covid, I'm not willing to accept any covid related medical interventions, because all interventions have potential side effects. That's a digital processor using optics to send/receive data, rather than electricity. It's using a similar method to fibre optics. The pulses of light are still representing 1s and 0s as you'd expect from a digital computer.
An analogue computer is not digital in any way. Everything is discreet voltages which can be varied, not 1s and 0s. A calculation is done by physically patching it to manipulate voltages in varying ways eg. adding 2v and 2v gives 4v, which is basic arithmetic.
A "real" computer is literally just a person counting manually, maybe using a few tools in the process to aid in the calculation. In fact, a "computer" was a legit job position back in the 50s - literally paid to manually do calculations.
You see the difference, right?

If you are doing it physically eg. manually counting in your head, it's not an analogue since you're actually doing it. An analogue is something replicating that, like a mechanical calculator, abacus, analogue computer doing it via voltages, or a slide rule. Digital computers technically are analogue in this sense, but we often differentiate since the methods of calculation digital computers do are not analogous to how humans do it.

As for FFTs in general, I learned a bit of it to understand additive synthesis (adding sine waves at different frequencies together to create new sounds) for creating sounds, funny how maths overlaps a lot with sound design!
