Title: ASMR
Post by: sg1008 on August 06, 2014, 10:34:28 PM
Well, didn't realise there was a term for it...but here you go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_sensory_meridian_response (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_sensory_meridian_response)

Quote
Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a neologism for a perceptual phenomenon characterized as a distinct, pleasurable tingling sensation in the head, scalp, back, or peripheral regions of the body in response to visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and/or cognitive stimuli.

Other attempts to describe the sensation refer to it as a "brain massage", "head tingle", "brain tingle", "spine tingle", and "brain orgasm".

I dunno about describing it as an orgasm per se...but its tingling, goosebumps in a good way. I used to put my head down in class and listen to people shuffling around because it was soothing...and since I was little I sometimes stroke my belly to get a tingling feeling. hehe...purely innocent.  :M

ANYWAYS, a few years back when I was at work I started to google some noises on youtube (to help me focus and stay awake) and found out there are a lot of different videos of sounds like whispering, typing, drawing, etc.... so I figured it was common and quite normal.

And now I see there is a term for is, ASMR, and I guess its not altogether normal and scientists have yet to study it. :scratchhead:

Well it IS real. No doubt about it. Its just soothing shit...like stimming.

Side note: Some people apparently use ASMR for insomnia.

Well, it doesn't put me to sleep. It soothes, but I stay very focused on the sounds...too focused to doze off.

Wow...it seems like ever since the term ASMR was coined some crazy stuff has come up...

for instance- many folks treat it like a SYNDROME. and there are SUPPORT groups. WHat?!

smh. its like saying enjoying icecream is a syndrome, and that there is an "i <3 icecream" support group. :/

Your definition of "normal" is that someone has posted videos about it on the internet? :orly:

ASMR has been around for a while.

ASMR has been around for a while.

Well..the sheer volume of videos astounded me. I spent a good deal of time searching for "sounds of people doing stuff", and "typing"... I kept coming up with random videos (including those annoying manufactured ambient noises) until I found the motherload of whisperers.

Actually, the first time i found whisperers there was no significant mention of ASMR anywhere. (this was 2010/2011). Now when I search whisperers theres all this new shit and every video is tagged with ASMR, or ASMR is in the upload title/name. So I figure it picked up just after I no longer really required listening to noises to focus at work. There were some really nice whisperer people before the ASMR storm...but the search the results are now dominated by popular folk, mainly well painted women with high definition lenses and tacky logos...

Crinkle :2thumbsup:
*ASMR* Crinkle Trigger Video (No Speaking) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlqMtmTo-Po#)

I didn't know it had a name or other people got the same sensations from it  till I read about it awhile ago but I've always had that weird tingly feeling when hearing some noises and even some songs though the names of the songs elude me at the moment

These two videos were fun to listen to. I'm familiar with the frog prince story, and if I am correct he is reading from the same book that I have.

Bedtime Stories | Sherlock Holmes: A Scandal in Bohemia (Whisper Reading ASMR) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjs-5qAdLB8#)

Bedtime Stories | The Frog Prince (Whisper Reading ASMR) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNvIRsBOkhI#)

Small unrelated question, was the frog's rhyme ever made into a song? I keep thinking it should be a song... something an artist like Loreena McKennitt would adapt.
"Open the door, my princess dear,
Open the door to thy true love here!
And mind the words that thou and I said
By the fountain cool, in the greenwood shade."

Nice vid!
It's a layering of bark peeling sounds and walking in leaves sounds. No video, just the sounds...

Yup...I remember when it wasn't famous and I'd spend lots of time searching for random videos with sounds lol. Now you can find hundreds of vids.
