I don't read the NY Times but a few weeks ago I noticed the cover story while waiting in line @ my favorite cafe that mentioned a man who needed a pacemaker replaced. These days, pacemakers use lithium iodide batteries with a maximum lifespan of 14 years instead of producing plutonium-238 which has a half life of 88 years(no need to replace them for the average human lifespan). His HMO was run by 7th day Adventists, who gave him an estimate of $135,000 for the procedure. He didn't have nearly that kind of money so he went to Belgium(which has nationalized health care) and got it done for $32,000.
So mark my words:
If Obamacare is defunded and the USofA returns to the same old health care system it has, then if I get sick or injured and need expen$ive lifesaving medical treatment that my insurance won't pay for, I will travel to a country with socialized medicine to get it done cheaper. I urge those who can afford to do so to boycott the uhmurcan free market when it comes to medical treatment. You WILL save big bucks!

And a LOT harder to get into! But don't worry, I certainly won't be coming to the UK. I think I'll goto Sweden if I need neurological treatment since they recognize that embryos are just hollow balls of cells and aren't deserving of the same basic rights as actual humans with functioning brains are. Canada is closer to where I live than Cuba and much easier to get into. Thanks for your advice, but I'll pass. :green:

I just got the partial explanation of benefits (EOB) for my knee surgery. The doctor's fee is $3,000, he accepted $825. I still need to get the anesthesia and outpatient surgery center bills at a minimum. My total cost for the surgery is $100.
Prince Albert's ankle fusion this last January cost over $15,000 and he paid a similar $100 fee.
He has an expanded Medicare plan and I have insurance through the State of Louisiana. He pays the standard Medicare premium and I pay about $150 a month or so.
Our prescription costs are fairly reasonable also. All of my diabetes supplies and medicines (including blood pressure) are free, most of the others are less than $8. PA's most expensive Rx is $35 a month. Between us we have about 12 Rx. All in all, we're doing fairly well actually.

Not really. "National health care" implies a single-payer system, such as the NHS in Great Britain. That's not what we have. We have health care with no public option, so the government orders us to buy insurance, or else. It's basically a legislative mandate for the entire population of the US.
