I got an ooold tv
lately, it says "AV" on every channel. I have an AV-channel, but lately all the channels have the "AV" in the corner, and the tv-set is acting weird in general.
whenever I switch channels, they'll always show static, and I have to switch back and forth several times, in order to get the channel I have saved there - but the channels don't randomize or mix. They'll show either static - or the appropriate channel - at random - and always with "AV" in the corner.
Does this mean something?
Or is it just fucked?
(please, no wild-ass guesswork, cus I can do that myself)
-
How old is the TV? Is the connection a standard coaxial? How do you receive your TV signal? If applicable, do you have a converter to convert a digital TV signal to analog?

It is very old fashioned, so it is plugged into the wall with a good old fashioned cable.
The TV set is from the 90s :D
I am wondering wether the remote control somehow fucked up. I ended up throwing it away, cus it doesn't work properly anyway. I borrowed the remote from a neighbors tv (same brand), and all it did was to change the color and style of the menus and stuff, but the problem persisted, so it seems the programming of the tv-set has ruined itself.
Other than those vague guesses, I have little to go by.
I'm just puzzled at the "AV" in the corner, since that seems to be a connecting factor.
It's seeming like I'm gonna hafta buy a new set, but I am reluctant (poor old commie bastard) since TV _can_ show nice images and audio. It just struggles to.. get there :I and keeps showing "AV" in the corner..

A TV from the 90s is not "old". :P Is your input signal analog or digital?

Not sure, but I suspect analog. It is an old typical "travel tv", not very high tech :I

According to Wikipedia, Norway has only digital broadcast TV. :dunno: What type of service do you use?
-
I suggest you service it....with a hammer! :zoinks:

I really don't know, it's part of the same provided to me by my landlord. I don't have a lot of control in that department :D I just drag muh cable from the tv, and to the wall, and voila, I got cable-tv!
It worked fine untill 2 days ago, when I woke up with "AV" in the corner. The remote control had also dropped to the floor (I often fall asleep w TV on) and my initial reaction was that the remote had done something, when it hit the floor. But since then I haven't been able to rectify anything.

Try re tuning it from scratch.
-
Open it up and stick your finger into the anode. Shockingly good fun! :lol1:
(actually no don't, you'll die... and stuff)

Without knowing make/model....see if your remote has an info/display/input or menu button, and see what comes up.
Sounds like you bumped the remote, you need to get in the menu and change the input back to cable/antenna...otherwise you will be looking at the blue screen with AV on the bottom for eternity.

It shows programming (when it doesn't show static), but with "AV" in the corner. So I am able to watch tv, but... with a hastle :D

I'm down with frugal living dude, but I think its time to buy a new one.

I have it on a lot of times for that very same reason

I have two CRT sets :tv: that I no longer use because they are too old ( 1980s and 90s ) to be
usable with the current cable remotes. Too bad you live all the way over there in the land of the frozen fjords!
-
They are everywhere here, usually at least 5 being given away on Craigslist every morning...trash day I've passed everything from 19" to consoles and big ass projection units, a lot with signs on them saying they work.
The trash men won't take them, the scrappers won't take them (no one locally is taking the tubes/glass)...kids are smashing them, or some of the scrappers are pulling the copper yokes out on the curb and letting them set with the back ripped off...it's becoming a problem in certain areas.

It struck me! My Norwegian family is quite wealthy. It's nothing that I have ever thought much about, cus, you know, they aren't exceptionally wealthy, they're just normal Norwegians (as opposed to me being broke as a cockroach), so I just threw it out there, and yup, they got tvs they don't use.
I now have a _big_ old Bang & Olufsen tv! Yay!

I'd rather buy a laptop computer than a new TV. :P

And this is why TV makers are shaking in there boots. they are afraid the computer will replace the TV
But, I also watch TV on my computer. it was bound to happen, just like CDs will one day go away. :'(

laptops tend to be kind of a scam.
Imho, you only need a laptop if you're one of these with such an epically busy job, you have to - have to - have to - finish your power-point presentation while on the subway.
Otherwise, laptops are a waste of money, compared to a good stationary :M
-
I guess for me comfort is everything. Laptops are cheep these days also, everything is right there at your finger tips
TV's stay in one spot usually, and cable these days is fucking bullshit. expencive, and fuck it
too many things wrong with it.

To be fair, laptops are probably practical for those who never plan to use a lot of computing power (such as no computer games, or other such demanding programs), but even then, some laptops really fail in delivering, and I suspect they were made to just barely send email without overheating. My mother has one such, I have gone through it and cleaned every single little crannie in there, and it just isn't strong enough to simply run windows, without struggling.
-
So have you ever had someone check your hard drive Zeg? :eyebrows:
But I dunno, I'll take your word for it. I don't game on my computer but I understand the tradition home PC has a lot more memory.
-
My laptop does fine granted I don't play memory heavy games but for most normal stuff it's great.
Speaking of old fashioned TV's here's a few I have had in the past

My dad would love those. He's such a commie sometimes. His office chair he dug out of a dumpster - right in front of his workplace, ingeneers, people in ties ":o"-ing from the office windows.
For years he had a 10cm little tv monitor on a radio, we had to adjust the antennae for 15 minutes to get some black and white tv.
On the one he has now everyone's pink. He refuses to upgrade, and knowing him he would rather downgrade considerably. It's almost impressive how he manages to turn down later used car models at more affordable price, than just a decade older one, considerably more worn and in need of repairs, for the same or slightly more. He is an expert!
He'll be all "Wait, this window closes properly."
"yes, yes it does."
"Hmmm... are you sure you don't have a Lada standing around?"
he adored that Lada

Our cats used to love sleeping on top of the tv, nice and warm for them. They can't sleep there now!
