LONDON (AP) - Poisoned Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko died Thursday in an intensive-care unit of a London hospital but doctors said they were unable to determine the cause of his death.
Litvinenko, a fierce critic of the Russian government, suffered heart failure and was heavily sedated as medical staff struggled to pinpoint what had made the 43-year-old critically ill, London's University College Hospital said in a statement.
"The matter is being investigated as an unexplained death," London's Metropolitan police said in a statement.
The former spy said he believed he had been poisoned Nov. 1, while investigating the slaying of another Kremlin detractor - investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya. Litvinenko's hair fell out, his throat became swollen and his immune and nervous systems were severely damaged, he said.
Doctors said tests virtually ruled out poisoning by thallium and radiation - toxins once considered possible culprits behind the poisoning.
"The medical team at the hospital did everything possible to save his life," hospital spokesman Jim Down said, confirming the Russian died Thursday.
"Every avenue was explored to establish the cause of his condition and the matter is now an ongoing investigation being dealt with by detectives," he said.
...
The former spy worked both for the KGB and for a successor, the Federal Security Service. In 1998, he publicly accused his superiors of ordering him to kill Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky - now exiled in Britain - and a year later spent nine months in jail on charges of abuse of office, for which he was later acquitted and which prompted his move to London.
On the day he first felt ill, Litvinenko said he had two meetings. In the morning, he met at a London hotel with an unnamed Russian and Andrei Lugovoy, a former KGB colleague and bodyguard to one-time Russian prime minster Yegor Gaidar. Later, he dined with Italian security expert Mario Scaramella to discuss the October murder of Politkovskaya.
Scaramella said in Rome on Tuesday he travelled to meet Litvinenko to discuss an e-mail he received from a source naming the killers of Politkovskaya, who was gunned down Oct. 7 at her Moscow apartment building, and outlining that he and Litvinenko were on a hit list.
Goldfarb said he had a photocopy of the four-page e-mail and confirmed it read like the hit list described by Scaramella.
"What's in there confirms what Scaramella said. It lists several targets for assassination, among them are Politkovskaya, Litvinenko, Scaramella, Berezovsky and others," he said.
But he refused to say who compiled the document, saying that could jeopardize the police investigation into the poisoning. Police declined comment about whether they had the e-mail.
After visiting the hospital Thursday, Berezovsky said British police have yet to speak to him but he hoped they would be in contact over the next two days.
Goldfarb said Wednesday there was nothing out of the ordinary in Litvinenko's meeting with Lugovoy, who also worked as bodyguard to Berezovsky, the most high-profile Russian exile in London.
Litvinenko refused to implicate any of the people he met on the day he believed he was poisoned.
I saw on the news that they have figured out what killed Litvinenko. It was a very rare element, a radioactive form of Polonium. This points to state involvement in Litvinenko's death because Polonium is a deadly, hard to make and rare poison.

LONDON (Reuters) - Polonium 210, the highly toxic radioactive isotope found in the body of poisoned former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko is a very rare, exotic material that is difficult to obtain, scientists said on Friday.
Britain's Health Protection Agency (HPA) said Litvinenko, who died on Thursday in a London hospital, had a significant amount of the radioactive isotope in his body.
But how it got there and where it came from is a mystery.
Although the by-product of uranium that was discovered by Polish chemist Marie Sklodowska Curie in 1898 is found in small amounts in the environment, most of it is made synthetically.
Radiation and chemistry experts say large-scale equipment, such as a nuclear reactor, would be needed to produce sufficient amounts to cause death.

Poisoning seems to be Putin's style. What a chode!! :poop:
-
They talked about it again yesterday on Swedish TV. They have found traces of polonium on planes flying between London and Stockholm. Come here, all terrorists and assasins! We love you! ::)
-
My Russian Cultures and Civilizations professor keeps talking about this.

Be prepared, Western world, for the U.S. can't protect our hides forever with their might.

Sweden can protect herself. We have...hm..thirtysix naval cannons to protect us from the Russians. Those naïve and cowardly idiots, who rule this country, disarmed, when the Soviet Union collapsed. ::)

I'm not afraid of Russia.

Good for you. I'm nearer to Moscow than Washington, D.C.. >:(

So Who is poisoning these Russians as of late?
-
Probably the Russian president, or some of his friends from the old KGB to be more precise.

You think Putin ordered it or they did on their own?
-
I'm pretty sure he ordered it. That's the way they do things in Russia, especially since he came to power.

Alexander Litvinenko believes that Vladimir Putin murdered him:
Poisoned ex-spy accuses Putin from beyond grave (http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=topNews&storyid=2006-11-24T153402Z_01_L23515828_RTRUKOC_0_US-BRITAIN-POISONING.xml&src=rss&rpc=22)
LONDON (Reuters) - An ex-KGB spy accused Vladimir Putin of his murder in a statement read out on Friday after his death from radiation poisoning, but the Russian president brushed off the accusation as "political provocation".
British authorities said large quantities of polonium 210, a radioactive isotope, had been discovered in Alexander Litvinenko's body. Police were studying how it got there and experts searched for traces of it at several locations.
"You may succeed in silencing one man. But a howl of protest from around the world will reverberate, Mr. Putin, in your ears for the rest of your life," the ex-spy said in a statement read out by friends in front of the London hospital where he died overnight of organ failure.
"May God forgive you for what you have done, not only to me but to beloved Russia and its people."

I see. Is Putin paranoid or something like that?
He's an ex KGB officer himself, so he most probably is.
-
The Russians also tried to poison the Ukrainian candidate for precident, Victor Yuschenko (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viktor_Yushchenko), two years ago.

I wonder how many others have been poisoned and We don't know about in the end.

Yes, they poisoned him with dioxin.
After seeing Mr. Yushchenko's deformed face on the evening news, the Dutch toxicologist Bram Brouwer contacted the Rudolfinerhaus to test some of Yushchenko's blood at the Free University of Amsterdam for dioxin. According to Dr Michael Zimpfer, president of the Rudolfinerhaus, these tests provided conclusive evidence that Yushchenko's condition resulted from "high concentrations of dioxin, most likely orally administered". This hypothesis had already been suggested by British toxicologist John Henry of St. Mary's Hospital in London, as the marks on Yushchenko's face are chloracne, a characteristic symptom of dioxin poisoning. Other scientists suggested that the illness might have been the result of rosacea but this theory failed to account for the severe internal medical problems suffered by Yushchenko. On December 11, Austrian doctors confirmed Yushchenko was poisoned with TCDD dioxin, and has more than 1,000 times (other sources say 6,000 times) the usual concentration in his body [2]. This is the second highest dioxin level ever measured in a human. Yushchenko's chief of staff Oleg Ribachuk has suggested that the poison used was a mycotoxin called T-2, also known as "Yellow Rain", a Soviet-era substance which was reputedly used in Afghanistan as a chemical weapon.
Look at what it did to his face:

Yes, it's scary. I wonder who did it.

He will have no choice. There can be no "coup" in this land, except over several generations as the socialists are doing.

Wow. Here's another article about it:
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/01122006/323/new-radiation-victim-confirmed-russian-spy-affair.html
"Tests have established that a further person -- who was in direct and very close contact with Mr Litvinenko has a significant quantity of the radioactive isotope Polonium-210 (Po-210) in their body," it said Friday.
"This person is now to be investigated further in hospital."
An HPA spokesman said the quantity of Polonium-210 was "likely to be of concern for their immediate health," it added, without naming the new victim.
But SKY News identified him as Italian academic Mario Scaramella, who had met Litvinenko at a sushi restaurant shortly before the Russian fell ill on November 1.
Sky News said the Italian had not yet shown any symptoms of contamination, but said he would now face extensive medical tests.
Scaramella, who has been under police guard at a London safe house, claimed he met Litvinenko to tell him both their names were on a Russian secret services hit list.
Some have accused Scaramella of having a role in the poisoning case, but he has denied involvement.

Yeah if there is one there has to be two or more.
