Those houses and gardens look pretty Swedish, although Swedish houses are usually of higher standard than that

Are the house layouts Swedish too? (except for the tatami room I suppose)

Yes, they look like typically small Swedish villas in some middle class suburb, although I can see that the Japanese don't use as expensive material etc. as we usually have in Sweden.

Real Swedish villa in Sweden

The houses that do look like that tend to be older. Those are the ones that use better materials. The modern ones use cheaper stuff.

Unfortunately. Build quality was better a few decades ago, too.

Same here. Prae-wars and interbellum houses tend to have a higher standard of quality in Holland.. and ja, are often nicer looking too.

Well, it depends.. depending on 'the thickness' of someone's wallet, I reckon.

Oh, and p/m 98/100 of houses are made out of stone/bricks here though.

What's all the weird shit on the roof?

^ It's there to keep the snow on the roof in Winter. Snow is an excellent insulation 'material' and ja, it acts like a blanket.

 :plus:

Fascinating.  Learn something new every day.  Here we try our best to keep snow off with heavily pitched roofs, etc.  I guess we don't work with nature as much as against it.

More seriously, those things are there for the chimney sweep.

More seriously? Hu? The horizontal wire thingies (on previous posted picture) are there to keep the snow on the roof, aren't they? (yeah, the vertical one is for what you mentioned but.. )

Well, the Swiss and e.g. Czech do this for that purpose (for sure). Seen it numerous of times on my Winter holidays.

Never thought of that. To some degree you must shovel the snow away, otherwise the roof might become deformed, but of course some 10cms of snow will isolate and make no damage.

You need to make sure that there isn't too much snow up there--you are responsible if it falls on somebody. That said, it is a great insulation material. A money saver.

BTW, you do know that if one were to even things out, the Japanese copy should be in Finland, not in Sweden, right?
