looks like it's going to be a spectacular disaster :2thumbsup:
we haven't even had the opening ceremony / nuremberg rally yet, and already there's a been a fuckup with the South Korean flag being shown next to the North Korean women's football players
fucking hilarious :zoinks:
-
I'm confused. How was that match happening if the olympics hasn't started yet? :apondering:
-
I have no idea either. I think it only officially starts at the weekend.
I guess women's football isn't as important as men's so no one cares when they play it
-
and then there's the athlete from Greece who has been kicked out for a racist tweet. It's off to a rocky start, that's for sure!
-
and the whole mess with the security and not organising enough people
-
then there's the fucking problems it causes those of us who actually live here:
-
I think it's hilarious that they're stopping shops and restaurants and whatnot in London from using words like "summer" and "gold" in their advertising. And how they'll throw you out if you have a Pepsi t-shirt.
Boris Johnson won't survive this. :zoinks:
-
I dunno, he did pretty well last night with his speech - he proper knocked down Mitt Romney :D
-
I'm curious - for those in the UK what's going on in your area? My town centre has deck chairs out with a big screen and speakers to show the sports, there's some rides too for the kids and it looks like there's some stalls being set up (probably by sponsors). In Leicester there's a big screen too and there's been some events on to celebrate, dunno what else is gonna happen though.
-
I am not even remotely interested in it :M
Why is "summer" and "gold" not being used in adverts?
-
I like the summer Olympics. I worked at the 1996 Olympics when they were in Atlanta, GA. I got to work closely with a lot of the athletes because I had 3 events being held in the place where I worked. Equestrian, Mountain Biking and Archery. the Mountain Biking dudes had to do their drug test pee in my office because it was the only one with a bathroom attached to it. They had to go into the bathroom, strip down naked in front of a judge and pee in a sample jar. A lot of guys can't pee under pressure so they had to sit in my office beside a mountain of gatorade and water and keep chugging until they were about to burst and could finally pee.

There were events up and down the country at schools to do with the olympics. Lost count how many certificates i have just because the urchin 'took part'. I dunno how many times he was told 'it's not about winning, it's about taking part'
Now i fail to see the logic here. It clearly is about 'winning' ...surely?
I am not sure if this is global thing, but here in the UK there seems to be an emphasis on teaching kids that winning is not very important. What is wrong with competition?
Sorry, just moaning :grrr:

in manchester we hav the football. last nights match was held at uniteds ground, near me
-
duno about the city centre, havnt been into town since mónday nite, but i expect there will be a big screen. there was one in birmîngham when i was there the other day. and flags everywhere

I assume Boris & Co think the words are too closely associated with the Olympics.
-
I find the winter ones easier to watch they have events that are at least somewhat dangerous

Boris is such a national treasure we should have his head on a spike outside the Tower of London... for posterity :zoinks:

Probably some sponsors dictating that too.

I watched some of the opening ceremony
however, 'Jerusalem' always makes me cry, as it was sung
at my Dad's funeral. I managed to sing it that one time, without
sobbing but since then i find it affects me too much. :'(
The James Bond bit with Daniel Craig and The Queen jumping from
the helicopter was quite funny, but i didn't watch any more.

Not hard to do.

Overall I enjoyed the Opening Ceremony. I liked that it focused more on the people rather than some fantastic extravagazana like Beijing or cultural aspect like gnomes. I didn't care much for the musical history section (because I only recognized one or two songs) and the overly long dancing by the NHS. I liked the tip of the hat to WWI, the NHS and Great Ormand Street Hospital.
The torch lighting was different, again focusing on people rather than one person.
Gave it a 9.2 out of 10.

But of course. They'll do that if they can. The difference is that in most other organisers would tell them to fuck off.
-
have you seen it when the winners 'bite' the medals? :tard:
-
Haven't watched any of it, yet.

I thought the opening ceremony was great. I was thinking it was gonna be awful, but the industrial revolution bit and the NHS were fucking brilliant
Who else would celebrate their health service in the olympic opening ceremony?
I wasn't as keen on the music bit either really, as I find music is such a diverse thing, it's rarely gonna be for everyone. But most people probaably liked that bit.
QV i think the overly long NHS bit was a political thing - we are having problems with out current govt and our NHS being sold off. The whole "Voldemort coming to take the NHS kids and then Mary Poppins saving them" bit was a big statement really. So that's prorbably why it went on for so long. the NHS is significant this year more than any other
-
btw that was Manchester the idustrial revolution part was :)
Manchester was the start of the industrial revoltion. They called it Cottonopolis
-
I forgot to add that I liked that they had the torch come in between 2 lines of people who worked on the Olympic Stadium construction.
