No more Twinkies?
NEW YORK — The maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread heads to court Tuesday to try to throw out its union contracts in a battle that leaves the iconic baker’s future very much in doubt.
Hostess Brands, which makes Ding Dongs and a variety of other sweet treats, is asking the bankruptcy court in White Plains, N.Y. to tear up labor agreements, which would, among other things, allow Hostess to change how it funds union pensions. The hearing is expected to last two days.
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, together represent more than three-quarters of the 18,500 workers at the company.
The Teamsters have vowed to strike if the judge agrees with management’s request and dumps the labor deals.
But both management and the unions agree that the company is unlikely to survive a strike.
“We would no longer have cash to keep operating,” said Hostess management in a letter sent to employees on Monday. “All Hostess Brands operations would shut down and liquidation would begin. The 18,500 jobs, plus the health insurance that comes with them, would be lost for good.”
The company filed for bankruptcy in January, it’s second trip to bankruptcy court since 2004. And management has said that the investors who are financing the company during bankruptcy would pull out if there is a strike.
Hostess was founded as Interstate Bakeries in 1930, although ........

When I was growing up, we used to eat a lot of bread from the Wonder Thrift Store! 8)

We had one here too.

We had one here too.
I used to take bread right out of the freezer to make my peanut-butter-and-jelly
sandwiches, it was easier to spread peanut butter on the frozen bread. :)

Found one when I was a kid, my dad was moving the neighbors fridge and it had somehow gotten behind it. At least 2 years old, still soft in the wrapper when you poked it. :zombiefuck:
Never really liked them, even when I was a kid. :dunno:

I really liked frozen bread as a kid
Mom wouldnt let me eat, unless I would say something at the table, so I usually didnt eat with the family.
Didnt bother me, I would raid the freezer and swipe a couple of slices of frozen bread.
Ah yes, good times

No, we sometime have cold PBJ's in lunch bags for the residents. Using frozen bread
keeps me from tearing the bread while spreading the peanut butter, it's a great easy trick!

CBC, that is cruel. What does peanut butter do to their dentures?
-
As for how long those things last, never eaten one, not being a yank, but from everything I've heard, they have a half life not a shelf life.

:lol1: There are other sandwich options for those who don't eat peanut butter.

That's kind of what I was thinking, with all the artificial ingredients. :nerd!:

Peanut butter and seedless raspberry jam on semi-frozen white bread ... :autism:
-
Seedless? nooooo! jam has to have the seeds in it, or its no longer jam, but jelly.
I make a pretty good blackberry jam when its blackberry season, and there is a great sodding glut of blackberries to be had. That is, when I am not busily turning them into pies, adding them to porridge, eating them right off the bushes etc.
-
I don't eat much junk food, but I do like twinkies. They have even started dipping them in chocolate.

I wouldn't worry about the products drying up. Some other company will buy them out and continue making them.
-
Little Debbie is too much competition.
-
We don't have Twinkies here in Australia but some of our cakes could probably come pretty close.
I wish I was one of those people that likes peanut butter but I just don't. Some jams are ok though. I haven't had a sandwich in a long time.

Any kind of sandwich? :orly:

Yes any kind. But about 5 minutes ago I had a piece of bread with cheese and onion on it heated up in the microwave. That was nice. :)
