It's annoying
I have really thick hair but it does my head in
anyway I've ben gelling it forward lately to avoid the "curtains" look I can get if I don't, but should I just cut it shorter at the top and then let it go messy - not in a scruffy way, just in a let-it-grow-however way?
suggestions?

I have really thick hair, and the easiest thing for me was to grow it long and keep it in a ponytail.
-
I couldn't stand growing my hair long because of waiting for it to dry afterwards, but also I'd look really girly if I did
yu can pull off the ponytail look. I definitely couldn't :P
-
Use shampoo and conditioner and then comb it. :viking:
-
cant be arsed with conditioner. could try combing it tho
-
What does it look like when you gel it forward? Need a pic. Am used to seeing it parted in the middle. Is this what you mean by the "curtains" look?
-
You know the brave macho answer, shave it off, shave it all off.

Do you condition your hair every day? :zoinks:

Yes. Si. Oui. Ja. Sim.
That ^^^ answers your question directly. However I never told Soph to condition every day and I will not be rude enough to suggest that Soph shower everyday or use deodorant everyday either. :zoinks:

My hair starts falling out if I wash it every day. So I am gross (according to some) and wash it twice per week.

messy is best

That's not gross at all.
As long as you wash the parts of your body that can get smelly or dirty, (All pits and extremities) you should be OK, also with just a weekly shower.
For lots of people with bad skin every shower they take is a real attack on their skin.

I have to shampoo every day, but most people my age have drier hair than I have,
so they can skip a day and it looks just as clean. Do what is right for your hair. :)
-
I have a shower every day. Just don't wash my hair every day. My skin is pretty normal I guess, except for my face which can get oily.
It is too hot here not to have a shower almost every day I think.
-
I bathe at least once per day, but I wash my hair only every other day or so unless it needs washing more often, like if I went swimming or got it dirty or something.
-
^As I recall, your hair is long. Long hair needs a lot more care imo. My hair is pretty short now and I am enjoying its shortness. :)
-
Yes, it's waist length. I usually use a 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner, so it's not that much trouble, really.
-
I was using TGel 2 in 1 and that worked well. Should get more of it. Have noticed that with short hair, I hardly need any conditioner.
-
I couldn't stand growing my hair long because of waiting for it to dry afterwards, but also I'd look really sexy if I did
fixed
<3 long hair on boys.

I've every so often considered washing my hair less often, but I do cardio daily so I'm sweating into my hair every day... would prolly be pretty icky if I didn't wash it afterward.

pull a zippo and shave it.

If you want to keep doing your own hair, it may be worth to get yourself a pair of scissors used to thin hair.
It's wise to see someone use it before you start using it yourself though. It's not hard to use, and, it can make a huge difference on the thickness.
I use it between visits to a hairdresser, to keep my hair manageable. And, have used it on my ex and my younger brother a lot, they both had awfully thick hair.

I forgot about those, I have them as well.
They work really well , I have really thick hair with some wave/curl to it and tend to look like I stuck my finger in a socket if I don't thin it out now and then.
-
I agree with Bodie there. Maybe try some wax (or gel) and make it look a bit messy. (http://www.wrongplanet.net/modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_rr.gif) Might suit ya.
-
well I'm gonna just cut it shorter at the sides and the back and then gel it
gonna have to do it before I go so will cut it tponight and see hoow it looks
if it's fucked, then I'll just take a hat with me!
but apparently I look younger in hats, so I'm fucked either way
oh well
I'll post pics if I can be arsed

Do you know how to cut layers in your hair? I think thick hair looks good with layers.
Hair Care : How to Cut Layers In Short Hair (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=018ejWEUy8g#ws)

I didnt really understand that tbh and dunno what layers are
I dont wanna fuck around doing anything fancy

???
Forget it Soph. I don't know why I would even suggest the services of a barber or stylist in reference to a question about hair. :facepalm2:
-
why've you deleted your post?
I get it about going to a barber. I didn't get the rambling about suits with colour and some man you were talking to about them, or the bit about leaving your hair how it is when you get out of bed
-
If you don't know how to layer hair, I also think you would be better served going to a stylist or barber. A professional would know what to do with your thick hair to make it look its best and would be able to cut perfect layers for you.
-
Going to a barber is too much hassle for me, and I don't want to be spending money either

OK, then here's another video about how to cut layers in short hair:
MyHairDressers.com Preview -- How to cut a men's basic layer haircut by Dale Ted Watkins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6huIcUe97Y#ws)

that looks complicated to me
-
that looks complicated to me
Layering is a bit complicated to learn at first, but layers would look good with your hair especially since you don't like the "curtains" look.
You could start by going to a barber or stylist once and watch what they are doing while you are getting the haircut, then maybe keep trimming it yourself.
-
is it easy (well, not easy, but not ridiculously hard) to do yourself though? I am cutting my own hair
I tend to just grab a bit at a time, trim it a bit shorter, repeat. til it looks roughly alright. it generally turns out ok considering I'm doing it myself and usually dont have a mirror lol
-
here's a bigger version. although I gel it forward now instead of having it to the sides. but it's about the same length. having it long at the sides really annoys me though, so I kinda wanted to get it short at the sides and back, and then slightly longer on top, and still gel it forward. if that makes any sense. I dunno the technical terms!

Any particular type of long hair? My mum and sister aren't big fans of my hair. I don't really do anything with it; I just let it take care of itself mostly, and tie it back in a ponytail most of the time for convenience.
-

You're wise to avoid it. I tried cutting my own hair in layers once, years ago.
It was a complete disaster! Now I just trim the ends when I need to.
-
alright gave it a go. looks about as you'd expect for a DIY cut haha, but feels good so if I trim any bedraggled bits before I leave tomorrow, it'll do
-
Adam this is only half-joking now, you might look kinda good with a mohawk. I doubt you'll do it but I legit think you might have the face for it.
(I think my own personal life might have been historically better if I wasn't so attracted to non-mainstream styles.)

ok, in case it has not been made explicitly clear before, I shall make it clear now:
I THINK PETER'S HAIR IS FUCKING SEXY AS FUCK AND ALL BOYS SHOULD EMULATE HIM BECAUSE THAT WOULD MAKE THE WORLD A MORE BEAUTIFUL PLACE
That what you were getting at? :P

I kinda like this guy's hair, but don't think I'd pull it off without looking like a lesbian or something lol
Once I can grow some facial hair I might give that a go, although by then I will probably (hopefully!) have a job so maybe not :P

You can donate half your hair folicles to me. I could use 'em so I don't have to shave my head anymore. :emb:
-
I think your hair looks good in your avatar (same as what you posted above), Adam. Don't know how it looks at the back though and that is always the hardest part to cut imo, especially when it is already short.
Barbers are generally cheaper to go to than regular hairdressers. I have been to a barber before, not many girls go to them though! But I wanted part of my head shaved and that was all so they did it for about $5.

Yes, that'll do nicely. My mum is still struggling with the concept of girls liking guys with long hair, and she was warning me today that long hair looks a bit sad and pathetic on older men, and that since I'm getting older, I'll have to watch out that I don't end up looking sad and pathetic, and like I never grew up and was a hippy.
She also thinks I need nicer clothes.

I've heard from guys with long hair that it is harder to get a date; I guess lots of girls have poor sense of aesthetics.
As far as my own preferences, two of my exes and one semi-fling I've had have had really long hair, and a third had pics of himself with long hair on the site I met him off of but cut it short right before meeting me- which was really disappointing. He said he got lots more girls talking to him on the site after pics of the haircut went up, though. Managed to talk a fourth ex into cutting his hair less frequently when he was dating me; it never got super-long but it looked a lot better shaggy than short-cut (in his case, partly because he was a fat fuck even before he let himself go, and the shorter his hair was, the fatter his face looked).
It's becoming a less strong preference now that I'm around more people with non-typical fashion sense (i.e. it doesn't have the same strong novelty factor for me), but it's still a preference.
I think this might be another case of your mum picking at something arbitrarily, Peter. Even if it wasn't fabulous looking, your hair isn't exactly the most important thing you have going on right now.

I do it a bit, but, I do go to a hairdresser once or twice a year too, because I love the pixie haircut, and, I am not good at getting that right. Can keep it into something decent for half a year or longer after getting it that short and sexy. I should see a hairdresser more often though, sexy beats decent.

Long hair is becoming a bit more acceptable on guys right now, I think. But yes, you'd prolly do poorly with a girl who wanted someone you aren't.

More just that she wants me to be happy. It's not very often that she throws insults at me; just when she's in a heightened emotional state, and particularly when something triggers bad memories and causes an amygdala hijack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amygdala_hijack). The stuff with my appearance is more of an anxious nagging, with helpful hints like "girls won't like it if you look like X" and "wouldn't you be happier if you did Y?". She has some serious theory of mind issues, so statements like those translate directly to "I won't like it if you look like X" and "I'd be happier if you did Y", and she has difficulty with the concept that her own tastes and preferences are not universal absolutes.

Better'n mine at the moment.
And I still think you should get a mohawk. And gauged earrings. And we should start trading clothes. We still have similar taste in clothes (well, not the stuff you're wearing in the bottom pic, that's like the shit I *have* to wear for work to look respectable).
