a social experiment on tv showed a "reporter" approaching people, simply stating "hi. i am here to control your life. give me your social security number"
most people asked would barely protest once, before surrendering their social security number to someone not giving any reason better than "in order to control you better"
he asked what they voted for, he asked the names of family and friends, and people gave it all up. they looked uncomfortable, they tried to protest at most once per question, but it took almost nothing to make them give it up.
ive often joked that you can mug people without any weapon in norway, and ive often suspected it would be possible for real as well, just walk up to someone and demand they surrender their wallet, "just cus"
we REALLY need a waking up, as a nation :(
our naiveness shows in other aspects of society, such as how people are being so forgiving of breivik and his massacre. ive long complained how naive we are, compared to other countries, but i really didnt expect people to actually surrender their social security number to some random douchebag telling them to so he can "control them better" :S

That's awful. I wonder if people here would refuse to hand over their social security numbers?

im curious as well.
another very interesting thing is a french docu, where they replicated an old cia experiment, where contestants are put to electrocute an unseen counter-contestant, for each "incorrect answer" they provide.
the contestants in the updated french version are led to believe they are trying out a new game show.
the hidden actor screams "in agony", and eventually begins to scream for mercy, "let me out! i dont want to play anymore!"
while a host urges the electrocutioner to continue.
eventually, the actor will quiet altogether, as if dead or severely injured, and upto 70% of the contestants - although in enormous emotional turmoil by then - would keep electrocuting what they now believed was a lifeless person.
in other words, 70% of normal civilians will - against their will, and in great emotional distress - kill someone - for a tv game show.
after each session, the contestants got to meet the actor (who was of course unharmed), and many broke down in tears. one of the FEW who had refused to hurt him any further, couldnt even look at him, and he had to convince her repeatedly that there had never been any real harm done, and that she had performed extraordinary in actually refusing to continue the experiment.

Wow, I didn't realize that they tried Milgram's experiment again for a TV show.

I think in the US the reporter would just get shot. But then I watch a lo of voilent US movies. Not my fault :zoinks:

i didnt know the english name for it, but yes. they showed footage from the original experiment also.
but yes, its amazing how... "pre-programmed" we humans really are

This experiment was done as recently as 2009 in the UK. We watched it in one of my Psych classes.

renaeden, just as fascinating (and worrying) to watch :]

Reminds of a tv show once seen; a guy did similar things using conversaional hypnosis. Is it something like that?

ummmm i dont know
you dont need hypnosis _at all_ in this example tho.
it is simply the biological human relation to any authority figure, from "the scientist" in charge, to even "the tv host" in charge. as long as a human percieves an authority to be "in charge", they will follow any order, down to killing someone for the purpose of entertainment - as long as the authority figure seems to insist

I am fucked then as an example of huminty because i automatically resist authority and question it. Has got me in trouble in the past.

you might have asperger syndrome :o

I watched a Top Gear episode the other day. Jay Leno was the guest, and he joked about the many speed cameras in the UK, pointing out that in California, people would just pick up their guns and shoot at them.
Authorities only have authority if you let them.
I know, it's not that simple, but mindsets differ.

I think most of us would, having heard so much about identity theft ... UNLESS we were told it was an anti-terrorism measure. :tinfoil:

And Razorbeard in 3......2......1....... :zoinks:

Sounds like something Lit would do
I am very distrustful of people in authority and don't fall for things like this. We get all kinds of scam mail and calls trying to get info like this or to send them money with fake invoices due to having a business. On a side note due to dyslexia I can't even give out my Social Security number without having it written in front of me which can be somewhat embarrassing :-[
-
This gives me an idea of a get-rich-quick scheme.
I'm gonna go mug people in Norway. :zoinks:
-
Most Scandinavian people in general seem fucking crazy to me.
-
I still find hard to believe that this is true. I mean the usual response to a stranger phishing you is to tell them to fuck off isn't it?
-
The trick is to look and sound official, if you give the impression that you are supposed to be doing what you are doing people rarely ask to many questions. Where I used to work I was what was called the 'clean up' guy I went around fixing things and picking up extra materials and equipment sometime $5000 worth or more I drove an unmarked white or brown van, it was rare for anyone to question me about what I was doing.

he had a cameraman with him, with the "TV2" logo on it.
they knew they were "safe"
they were responding to "an authority" (tv) even if he was clearly being a douchebag "hi! i am here to control you!"

If anyone approached me with a TV camera and asked for my Social Security number, I would have a telegenic response ready: :fingers:
-
Pretty much how I would react.
-
How big is the chance that the reaction of the two of you would be broadcasted?
There is no fun in showing sensible people when it comes to something like this.

If we were filmed "live," there might not be time to censor us, and all the world would see our

its still worrying that they were able to produce 5-6 samples.
our towns are small, and preferably, there should be no such samples at all.
its like when americans get angry at examples of stupid americans
"what is mexico?" "is it a type of food :S" <---for example, on tv
"HEY!!! they only show the dumbest ones they can find >:0" <---counter argument
^
but you shouldnt be able to find ANYBODY that stupid.

People often are that gullible.
Don't think it is just Scandinavian.
We've got ads here, warning people not to tell everything.
Every time I do my banking online, I get told not to give my codes to anyone.
Lots of time banks send out warnings how they never ask for a pin-code via phone or email. Apparently plenty of people just give that, when asked by someone appearing to be an authority.
Gullible, very gullible.

How long is a Social Security number? Is everyone meant to remember their own?

It's nine digits and most adults do memorize their own Social Security number and maybe the one of their spouse as well. I can't remember my daughter's without looking it up, though.

List them here and they'll be conveniently available the next time you need them. :zoinks:

Hmmm, I guess we should do as odeon says, that way we won't forget! Good idea! :autism:

I can remember all the numbers just I can never get in the right order no matter how hard I try.
And yes I could have stolen so much stuff and can see how people do it and get away with it, just I could never bring myself do it and if I did it would never stop bothering me.

Does this explain how a couple of German Regiments were able to conquer Norway in WW II??
That's seriously fucked up. People are such sheep. :sheep:

The biggest flaws of humanity right there. Most people have the "herd mentality" and it's the psychopaths who are the shepherds. Always.

norway held out for 3 months, which is _very impressive_, for the nations size, compared to germany.
during ww2 norwegians KNEW about death and pain. my grandfather grew up with rows of hanged pow's down the road to his school (it was next to a military camp, which was demilitarized only a few years back)
even during the 80s, when i was little, norwegians were aware of the real dangers of the world.
i guess the symptom of dumbness is western-wide, but naiveness abound here due to our great wealth and safety.
our oil-wealth came about in the 60s and 70s
