I was probably five when my grandmother first gave me coffee, but it was more milk than coffee, really.  I still like it with a lot of cream or milk.

I was also five when she gave me my first and last cigarette.

I just had a tall caramel macchiato from Starbucks.

I don't remember what age I was when I first started drinking coffee. My parents would give me a cup of coffee here and there. I got into it during high school because my best friend in hs loved coffee and we would go to Starbucks a lot. I don't drink it every day though. I drink it once or twice a week at the most.

I have a really cool globe that I enjoy looking at.  Actually, it's my daughter's globe, but I still enjoy playing with it.  I knew where Wales is as well.  Maybe we should have a geography bee, since we Americans are supposed to be so ignorant of geography.

Three years ago my son asked our local "Santa" for a globe (he was four, then) and he's damn hard to stump in geography. If it's on his globe he knows it. Cities, countries, lakes, rivers, deserts, islands  ... it doesn't matter ...  he's got it.

I don't think that applies just to americans though, I think a lot of people just aren't that interested in geography no matter what country they are from.  I don't think this makes them ignorant people, after all, if we all shared the same interests life would be pretty dull.

I love the Leapfrog products. We couldn't use them, though. My son is autistic and shit like that used to scare the HELL out of him. Any toy that made noise on its own terrified him. And, if it had an electronic sounding voice it was a whole new level of horror for him. We have made enormous steps with him, but he's a little past most of the Leapfrog stuff at this point.

I wouldn't mind having the math one, though. He gets the math concepts and knows the tables fairly well, but the tests are timed on a computer and he fails them. He just won't take tests ... computers are just too much fun. He won't 'stay put' when he needs to.

My eldest son is almost 10 and he still gets freaked out by unexpected noises- going into the supermarket used to be hell for him because of the rides they have in the door way.  He would go in with his coat over his head and his hands over his ears and we'd have to guide him past them.  He's getting better now but he's still really sensitive to stuff that makes unexpected noises.

Stores are still rough (on both of us), but he's gotten to the point where he can cope, most of the time. He's got such a mature way about him most of the time, that it stuns people.

In the Meijer freezer section, the noise level is ridiculous with about a hundred and fifty coolers going at the same time. I have to chew on the inside of my cheek and keep my teeth sucked dry the whole time, in order to deal with it and I can't talk to people other than my pre-fab "HI!", but we get through it. Watching him, closely, he "plays" with the acoustical nulls and re-inforcement areas of the place at first, but he sometimes says "This is getting to be a bit much. We need to move it along, please." He is SO aware at times, it fills me with hope.

Whoever thought of the starbucks coffee in that place and the cup holders on the carts was a genius. Coffee calms me down really well.

Yes, it is a little pricey, but I just found it online for $79.99, which is considerably less than I paid for a similar one last year.

You can even see it demonstrated online.

Coffee is a requirement of a day without bloodshed.  preferably Gevalia dark roast (french roast is just a little too dark).  I started drinking it when I had to get up real early for my paper route as a kid. These days, I start with a pot in the morning that usually lasts me through till the end of lunch.  Yum.

Don't underestimate how seriously American's take coffee.  We drink insane amounts of it and it's almost always fresh brewed.  There's always selections of different roasts and flavors.  If you get into the heavier drinkers, they'll be able to tell you all about different coffees meant specifically for the purpose of adding to other coffees for effect or two combine two different roasts.

To put it lightly, imports are common.

Simple. You can buy raw beans in most decent coffee shops here. Raw beans are sorted by origin. Java beans in one bag, Colombia in another etc. Java or Kenya is what I prefer. You take about 200 grams and spread them evenly over a metal plate in an air oven (an "ordinary" kitchen oven) and roast at about 240 C until they begin to "sweat" fat and other liquids. Pull the plate out, pour the beans of and let them cool down. Then grind them in an electric coffee mill. Freshly roasted and ground is the best, but the most important is that the coffee is freshly ground.

Java, IMO, but I'm really too lazy to actually do all that.

I started drinking coffee as a toddler. They warned me I'd get red hair and green legs because of it. I so hoped that would happen. Never did.

I didn't start drinking coffee until I moved out. I thought it would be a cheaper caffeine alternative to Coke and I'd save money, but it didn't work because then I had a coffee AND Coke habit :P. Now I just have a Coke Zero once a week or something. I have two coffees a day, morning and afternoon, and sometimes one at night when I want something hot to drink.

I usually avoid coffee in the evenings, since I occasionally have episodes of restless leg syndrome.  :lemur:

My daughter works at a coffee and tea specialty shop and provides us with all the coffee we need. Apparently, one of their perks is 500g free coffee per week. Interestingly she doesn't drink coffee herself.
