Ok, this is going to be a really unpopular thread  I don't care
Ok so the word emo gets thrown around a lot, on here and in life. I'm guessing most people dont know what emo really is. It's music. That's all. To call someone emo beause they are being an emotinal twit, that's something else. Im talking about the music.
ok so 99% of it DOES suck - but it comes from punk !!!! So, it all can't be that bad. I don't like "emo" at all really, so put your Dashboard Confessional away TYVM , Im talking about Screamo.
Bands like ( one of my favorite bands of all time) AFI  changed music...... It went from Hardcore Punk, to Post- Hardore, to something called Emo. Screamo is NOT emo. but it is very much like emo when it comes to some of the musical styings and it is definitly "from" emo.
So, Give Screamo a chance. No anything you hear on the radio or music stations is going to suck along with evey other song on the radio.
Here are 2 examples of some of the best Screamo out there. If you dont like "alteranative" music in general of course you wont like it, but if you do, I bet you'd like it. And I bet it surprises the hell ouf of you that " this is emo".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64NlKebN9HA
And as for the style of clothes and dress? It's just fashion. It's been aound since the 70s
When I was a teenager I did that too, and I still dress the part. :o
It was just called punk then.
And holy shit those emo guys are fiiiiiiine. One starts talking to me and I go " uh ,, bluh bbuhhh ahh".....
now go on and tell me that Sreamo sucks :)
-
Consider the term emo to be the name for the current generation's occurrence of children in black. I know them.
-
Sorry Eris , I still think screamo sucks :P
-

yeah  for that
It's kind of what I tried to say but was extremely long winded about it
Emo is this generation of " kids in black ", that's all........ but emo started way back in the 80s.
I was a "kid in black"
no i didnt cut myslef and cry. But I've been into punk and goth since I was very young, and have always been "alternative"
I think when people all it Scene, I think that just means it is not attached to the music anymore. And this whole "crunk punk" thing is absolutly retarded and it is a shame it is catchin on :(
Sorry Eris , I still think screamo sucks :P
fair enough. at least you like Manson

Then should we listen to emo and like, apologize to each other profusely while we slit our wrists and write bad poetry with the pretty red water ?

I do not mind the screamo you posted and I have actually paid with my own dollars to acquire some AFI, but I am more of an old time headbanger.
I like guitar music, mostly.
I do listen to all kinds of music, since my appetite for music is huge, but again, being an older guy with a few years of music industry work in my past, I prefer to relax and wind down to music that can shake the floor and I often do shake the floor when I am alone.
These days, my "active" listening has gone from about sixty percent hard rock (various sub-genre included of course), twenty percent jazz, ten percent classical and random mix of everything else (from say about ten years ago) to more like forty percent jazz, thirty percent hard guitar-shredder rock and then a random mix of everything else.
TBH, I have heard so many definitions of the term "emo" regarding music genre, that I feel that it has lost its meaning.
Tell me ... WTF does emo even mean in terms of a music genre.
(... but, PLEASE, I can google as well as the next.)
Show me what razor I can flail against to cut wisdom into my calloused mind.

EMO means emotional, and it comes from punk
It started in the 80s actually, one of the first bands was Dramarama
Emotional lyrics and the loss of that notorious punk beat really define it, but as with all music, it went in different diretions. Just like any regular alternative that is played on the radio , popular emo sucks ass.
Screamo came from Hardore Punk. Other types of emo come from other kinds of punk.
AFI and the post-hardcore scene really brought it into the mainstream really
harcore punk became post-hardore then became screamo
I dont know a ton about other kinds of emo, but it allllll started in the 80s with bands like Dramarama
This is one of the first emo bands of all time, and it was way before it started sucking. Still had that punk beat a little bit. I think it was like 1985 or something ?
I love this song :headbang2:

Part of me wants to spam this thread with stuff like Ke$ha.
I don't like her.......well maybe a little.... :zombiefuck:
-
Kesha is atually considered crunkpunk acutally :thumbdn:
see how bad this shit is getting ? Emo thats turning into crunkpunk is the worst music of all time.
Ok so it was funny with the screamo rap covers, but these fucking people are taking themselves seriously
and then there is Ke$ha
I want to kill her :) hehe I hope she dies :)

Lol well yeah im not a fan of her music (apart from like one song)
Although funnily enough Ke$ha is a bit like you were personality wise what with not going for relationships but just teh sex.
I have no idea how that is relevant but heck I felt it was :P
-
yeah i guess I like her attitide, like I like Lady Gaga's attitide, thye seem ok just hate the music. I just was raised a punk kid and it's amazing I'm as openminded as I am
You like my new gag ? I actually put that on people. haha. It makes it easy to spit it someones mouth

You're starting to speak some blasphemy here. :thumbdn:

I was a kid in black....way back in the early 80's.
I used to get picked on for painting my nails black, and trust me that wasn't easy to do (wasn't a bottle of black polish to be found within a 20 mile radius back then were I lived), used to mix testor's black model paint with clear nail polish.
I was more a metalhead into the darker stuff though.

It isnt painfull, the ring part keeps your mouth open wide as it can get though. I tried it on to check, it is just very uncomfortble- but that is kind of the point. I'm not the one wearing it anyway ;)

Que ?
I hope you don't like crunkpunk or ska. That would be a shame. But I'm not saying that my music is " better " or anything. Lots of technically better music with many more chords. There are tons of talented people making music that I dont care for. I'm not saying it is better....well, it is better than ska.

the 80s was the best and worst musical decade in history, imo 8) Morrissey made it more good than bad, though. And I know what you mean about the black nailpolissh not being avaisable. when I was a teenager in the late nineties it was hard to find, and I had to order my hair dye from a catalog. But it is everywhere now. I got purple hair dye and bleach at the drugstore now :screwy:
and I am a metalhead too :headbang2: I like all kinds of music. Just not ska. :)

Looks good :orly:

Most youth look that ridulous that I can't even tell who is emo/scene/wanker etc. 5 years ago I easily could. :dunno:
As for this thread, I see little point of trying to differentiate what is emo and what isn't. Terms are fairly subjective, and in my opinion "emo" applies to anything from post-hardcore to scene. The music doesn't need to be depressing, simply just needs to be made by pasty skinny white kids in skinny jeans. That could also mean some electronic music.
From that, they're a subgenre of hipster. :zoinks:

Morrissey? That fag was the Terry Jacks of the 1980s. :thumbdn:

I like one of his songs, but not a huge fan of him. A lot of it seems to be fairly melodramatic.

Ok, this is going to be a really unpopular thread I don't care
.....'' and we don't care'' screamed john lydon back in the seventies which is where punk started for me.
I was a little girl, and so so wanted to be grown up. i recall my brother coming in with his copy of the sex pistols record 'never mind the bollox here's the sex pistols' and how my mum and dad went crazy! things like that were 'shocking' back then you see.
I liked your two tracks, the first one more so...but i have to admit i am not really clued up on all the terms like 'screamo' but yeah i love music like that. check this out eris, this is early eighties, and a uk band called crass
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Furrw0VDpWM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Furrw0VDpWM)
is this screamo, or how would you classify it? i think its wierd how punk has changed over the years, and other little sub groups have formed.
many years later i saw the same thing happen with 'rave' - it was underground to start with, and just called rave, then it got split into techno, trance etc. i suppose everything evolves.

I'm don't know much about the youth of the last 5 years honestly. I know I dont like this brand new emo stuff with the rap influenes. I grew up in the late 90s but i've managed to follow music.
You're right it's pointless to pinpoint what emo is. It is like trying to define punk, there is so much variety it is impossible. In fact, emo IS punk - so we should just call it punk and leave it alone
What I am trying to say is that there IS "hard" emo out there, for people who like metal-type music.....and its not all boys crying into their guitars.
and speaking of boys crying into their guitars....
Morrissey? That fag was the Terry Jacks of the 1980s. :thumbdn:
:o
Oh, I don't think so  Morrissey and The Smiths are brilliant. He is a class act. Johnny Marr is an excellent songwriter ( he is writing music for modest mouse now) and Morrissey is a brilliant lyrist.
I sat and thought a long time about the perfect song that would change your mind, I would post "pretty girls make graves" because that is my favorite Smiths songs, but it is a bit dramatic ;) , so I'm going with this

bad religion - get off
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=md-oOj5ORVc
lascivious, it's all that i can think of as i drag my feet, searching
lika a diogenes, dangerous, the adjectives of the decade and of your
alluring intricacies,
i can see your green-screen mentality and i can
feel the sting of its consequence, and i know i shouldn't but it's too
much to ignore, an emotion i deplore,
every time i look at you, i just
want to do it, i can clench my fist right through it but i just want
to get off,
rectilinear, this direction we've been heading never
realizing we are on a runaway machine, angular, the momentum that does
turn us one step further on our ladder, one more turn toward the east,
i realize your green-screen mentality and i know it is shared by many
more,
i know it is quite impossible but i am damned to find a way to
revolve the other way, every time i scrutinize i just say "screw it",
we're on a ride down a blind conduit and i just want to get off
-
