Title: Why do people post so mucxh in that weather thread?
Post by: Adam on January 26, 2011, 03:57:49 PM
I see it pop up all the time, but to me it just seems boring as hell so I never read it and haven;t contributed to it much

Just wondering why people like posting that

I know that forum is for spammy stuff, but in the other threads there mostly seems to be a chance of actually talking about stuff, whereas just posting the temperature or weather that day seems boring as hell to me

I fidn the weather boring in general though. it always does my hed in how they have weather forecasts on the news

I dont pay much attention to it. I usually only post in it if the weather is a bit extreme. I think I posted in it during the snowy spell.

Do you agree that weather forecasts are ghey?

They do the local weather on the local news, then do the national weather two mins later on the natioonal news

???

wtf

Why do we need local weather if we've seen the whole country's weather? and why are we interested in the whole country's weather if we already know our own?

Obviously if people are travelling then sure, but shouldn't those people just look that up themselves on the internet or something?

So retarded. They go on and on and ON as well, I swear they just make them talk that much so they can justify employing a whole extra person and paying them a salary

So retarded

Weather forecasts are not a waste of time to me. I would watch all of them during the cold spell to see when the cold would end. I would pay huge attention to local forecasts in areas where I had flats lying empty to see what yhe risk of burst pipes was. I was even reading the 5 day forecast on ceefax a few times each day.

Even now I look at the forecast if Im going far away so that I can decide whether to take the car or thr bike. I wouldnt want to be caught in rain, miles from home on my bike.

I post in it sometimes because it is available. It also serves as an excuse to repost my favorite Johnny Nash song from time to time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD5MxYVwkXM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD5MxYVwkXM)

And now, time for another video.

I watch the weather forecast cause I drive. I hate driving on ice and snow. I do realize that watching the weather doesnt mean that the weather will change, but I like to be prepared. I live relativly close to lake erie so there is always lake effect snow. I hope the whole place become a sink hole. In fact lets just nuke the whole city.

Stay inside I guess. Not go out driving anywhere. The last cyclone happened in 1989 and I don't even remember it.

If it was tornadoes happening there would be need for a safe place. But this is just going to be like a really bad winter storm. Would you believe they have warned about flooding. Thought we were safe from that on this side of the country, heh.

Not in the West we don't. Haven't had a cyclone in over 20 years. The East has had some wacky weather; dust storms, flooding, cyclones.

Just saw on the news that the cyclone is weakening. So it won't be as bad as what was implied before. Here is a map that GA just showed me:

I live between Perth and Bunbury.

Yeah, they are the same, except the direction they move in, I think.

The cyclone warning has been cancelled anyway, the cyclone has sort of dissolved at sea. Ah well there goes the excitement.

Looks frightening.

Yes, I found this:

Quote from: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/as_australia_storm
CAIRNS, Australia – A massive cyclone struck northeastern Australia early Thursday, tearing off roofs, toppling trees and cutting power to thousands, the most powerful storm to hit the area in nearly a century.

The eye of Cyclone Yasi roared ashore at the small resort town of Mission Beach in Queensland state, battering the coast known to tourists as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef with heavy rain and howling winds gusting to 186 mph (300 kph).

Yasi compounded the suffering for Queensland, waterlogged by months of flooding that killed 35 people and inundated hundreds of communities. It struck an area north of the flood zone, but the Bureau of Meteorology said it would bring drenching rains that could cause floods in new parts of the state.

Witnesses reported roofs being ripped off, buildings shaking and trees flattened under the power of the winds. Officials said the storm surge would flood some places to roof level....

Post by: renaeden on February 03, 2011, 12:42:41 AM
It is mainly over now, with Cyclone Yasi now a Category 1 and heading inland. No deaths or injuries have happened and that is mainly due to the precautions people took - evacuating out of town, going to specific shelters and generally staying inside.

Since Cyclone Larry a few years ago people rebuilt their houses with stronger foundations, walls and roofs and this has helped as well. Smaller towns did not do this, though, and there are a lot of houses now with missing roofs and walls. There are also a lot of trees that have been ripped up and are now blocking roads so now they have to get special machinery in to move them.

It turns out I was wrong about the fatalities:
Quote
The first confirmed fatality of Cyclone Yasi is a man who asphyxiated on fumes spewed out by a generator he was using while sheltering from the devastating storm.
:(

There are also reports of animals - people's pets - wandering around the streets. Animals were not allowed in the evacuation centres so a lot of owners had to leave their pets at home.

I saw on the news that some people did not go to evacuation centres, instead choosing to take their pets and drive away from where the cyclone would hit.

The lack of shelters that accept pets during hurricanes is a problem.  I know that some people did not evacuate with Hurricane Katrina because they could not find a hotel that would take pets.  I think some of the Gulf of Mexico states have proposed legislation to require hotels to accept pets during hurricane evacuations.

They should always accept pets. Fucking disgusting if they don't

In a way I can understand it.  You don't know if the dogs have fleas and will leave same for the next occupants of the room, if they'll mess on the carpet, or if they'll bark while the owners are out and annoy the other rooms in the place.

But in general, we didn't have much disturbance from the pets who were accepted during Katrina.  They were well behaved and quiet.

Humans can be dirty and have lice too, they can also be disruptive and that should not be a big enough concern under those circumstances

Also, some of the other guests who stay in the hotel can have allergies to cats or dogs and they would be made miserable if they stayed in a room where a pet had recently resided.

A lot of the extended stay hotels like Marriott's Residence Inn accept pets, but charge a $100 pet deposit.  I read that the Boulder, Colorado, Residence Inn waived their pet deposits for people who came to stay there because they had been displaced from their homes due to the wildfires.  Maybe other hotels should follow suit whenever there are natural disasters.

Religion and politics are too divisive.  It's more polite to talk about the weather.  :M
