like imagine a cop show where they end an episode solving nothing
"ah well, you win some you lose some"
maybe even lose more, win a few :D
i wish i watched The Wire when it was on :(

Well if you count shows like 48 hours, then they do exist somewhat.
-
the first 48 is a great detectives show

:plus: That's the one I meant, thanks.

"Wire in the Blood" is excellent for a cop show where one of the main characters is a forensic psychologist. English.
Some Danish, Swedish and Swiss cop shows I have watched are excellent as well. "The Eagle" from Denmark(I think) was brilliant.
"Spooks" which is about MI5 is also brilliant. English.
"Waking the Dead". English. Large forensic componant.
"Murphys Law". English with Irish actor James Nesbitt who is also a spunk :green: Not sure if that matters to you
and
"Silent Witness" which is more a forensics based show but cop stuff in it. Harry Cunningham is Devine :eyelash: :eyelash: English.
I very rarely invest in American cop shows (sorry my US buds :-\) but Law and Order isn't too bad for light weight stuff. We had "The Wire" here but I couldn't seem to get into it and then I lost track of what was going on.
Hope that helps.

but.. one thing is a good cop show
another is a cop show that shows a good percentage of cases _lost_
law and order is good, but they always, always, always, always win. always!
one of the best cop shows i watched was spanish, it had very "brutal" plot twists, such as the protagonists wife being killed and stuff. i love when shows get a bit gutsy, but im asking for a lot more than that :D
we made a cop show here also, norway, omg how it sucked :S mostly soap-ish drama in a cop-station setting

If you want people dropping dead, Spooks is a good one for that. They can spend a whole series going after a significant perpertrator and never catch them. In the last series one of their spies was kidnapped then found about 6 episodes later, burnt to a crisp, and even though they suspected who did it, they couldn't touch the bastard. It was horrific.
All the shows I mentioned by name are pretty good with the "win some, lose some" scenario.
Brits just do it better with crime drama, in my opinion. Very gritty and disturbing.

It's not a cop show and a totally unbelievable movie, but I do enjoy Hot Fuzz.

I really liked Life on Mars, and Ashes to Ashes.
