DKE apologizes for pledge chants
By Jordi Gasso, Sam Greenberg

Friday, October 15, 2010

After the campus outcry sparked by Delta Kappa Epsilon’s inflammatory pledge ritual on Old Campus Wednesday night, the fraternity apologized to the Yale Women’s Center in a meeting in Linsly-Chittenden Hall Thursday night.

After the meeting, attended by four DKE brothers and five Women’s Center board members, both parties expressed optimism that they could construct a “productive relationship” in the future. Also present at the meeting was Melanie Boyd ’90, director of undergraduate studies for Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies and special adviser to both the Center and the Dean of Yale College on Gender Issues.

In the wake of the incident, fraternities Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Phi Epsilon condemned DKE’s actions and supported the Women’s Center’s Thursday announcement that it would hold a forum about the incident Friday. Members of DKE, Yale College Dean Mary Miller and Dean of Student Affairs Marichal Gentry have said they will attend the forum, the Women’s Center said.

At their pledge initiation on Old Campus, DKE members shouted phrases such as “No means yes, yes means anal” and “My name is Jack, I’m a necrophiliac, I f--- dead women.” Some of the students were blindfolded and being led in a line with their hands on each others’ shoulders.

In an e-mail to the News Thursday, DKE President Jordan Forney ’11 called the pledge chants “inappropriate, disrespectful, and very hurtful to others.”

“It was a serious lapse in judgement by the fraternity and in very poor taste,” he said, adding that DKE does not condone sexual violence.

The Women’s Center deemed the actions “hate speech” and “an active call for sexual violence” in an e-mail to the News Wednesday night. The Center sent out e-mails condemning the incident to the panlists of organizations including some of Yale’s sororities, Freshman Outdoor Orientation Trip leaders, Yale Hillel, and MECha, the Chicano student organization. Within hours, accounts of the event were circulating throughout the undergraduate community.

Business Coordinator Elizabeth Deutsch ’11 said the Women’s Center sees its role now as helping to bring people together to discuss this issue and figure out how to move forward. She said the organization does not want to be antagonistic and wants to collaborate with DKE and others to help make Yale’s sexual culture more respectful. She said the Center wants to make Yale a place where people think about their language and actions to prevent future incidents.

The Women’s Center compared Wednesday’s events to an incident in January 2008 when 12 Zeta Psi pledges stood outside the Center holding signs that read “We Love Yale Sluts.”

Kathryn Olivarius ’11, who served on the Women’s Center board in 2008-09, said that sexist incidents, including the “no means yes” chant, have happened before at Yale. She said these types of incidents tend to repeat themselves every year or two since there is not enough education about sexism and other prejudices at Yale and there is little memory for these things.

But Deutsch said she thinks Yale culture has changed since the Zeta debacle.

“I think that the fact that the e-mail and the video went viral last night shows the campus is at a different place,” she said. “There seems to be a broad consensus that this is unacceptable.”

When William Bradley ’12, president of SAE, heard of the event Wednesday night, he contacted the Women’s Center and the Pi Beta Phi sorority to express his regrets about the incident and apologize on behalf of SAE.

But Bradley referred to the pledge’s chanting of “SAE” during their initiation as part of the good-natured rivalry between the two frats and “friendly banter.” President of Sigma Nu Matt Chesky ’12 said he thought despite the campus reaction, DKE did not intend to offend anyone.

James Berry ’12, president of SigEp, said he did not see the issues of sexism and sexual violence as limited to Greek life at Yale, but rather as a larger issue that is not talked about enough.

Harry McNamara ’11, president of Sigma Chi, and Bill Toth ’11, president of Alpha Epsilon Pi, declined to comment on the incident.

Miller also called the incident an opportunity for discussion and education.

Although she said DKE’s chants were “appalling,” she added that she was happy to have been asked to lead the panel at the forum.

The deans and masters of Davenport, Calhoun and Pierson colleges also sent out e-mails to their students, and offered opportunities for students to discuss the issue.

“The plain fact is that in 2010 it is time to question some aspects of activity that HAVE NO PLACE at Pierson and at Yale,” the e-mail to Piersonites said. “Pledging to a fraternity gives nobody the right to hurt or verbally assault a single Piersonite.”

The “Forum on Yale’s Sexual Climate” will take place today at 1:00 p.m. in LC room 102.

I continue to be shocked by the large percentage of people who don't pretty much assume this is how the vast majority of frat boys think and act.

They were pretty much retarded for doing that in front of a women's center, but it's also not especially surprising that a bunch of frat boys were not only pigs, but also stupid about it.

Organized student groups for males; sororities for females. The wikipedia page might be helpful. It says they're called Corporations in European universities.

As far as impact on the frat boys themselves, yes.  And generally the more severe mygoginy happens at parties and or hazing in the victim pool sororities.

I always thought most of them were moronic as well.

Maybe the academic and service ones were exceptions, but the point of fraternities and sororities seemed to me to be to see how drunk and stupid they could get.

Yeah, doing it in front of a women's center is in poor taste. If it was behind closed doors I don't see a problem.

On another school issue, which is probably fairly old by now - did the Jena 6 get the jail time they deserved, and did that fucking Reverend Troublemaker get his lights punched out for sticking his nose in where it didn't belong. Assault is assault, and 6 onto 1 is not on IRL, and I don't give a fuck whether they were black, white or brindle.

They only showed the Dr Phil ep today on pay, which is why I'm mentioning it.

Yes, very interesting. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton - 2 of the biggest mouths of the reform movement, and 2 of the biggest dickheads to boot. M L King would be ashamed of those idiots if he were alive today. They fail to realise that 6 kids attacking 1 is going to end up with somebody getting seriously hurt if not killed, and it doesn't matter what skin colour they were. The say that white kids wouldn't have copped the same punishment? Personally I think that's horseshit. Anyway, they should have gotten serious jail time, the whole lot. Juvenile or not. What if they'd have killed the kid?

Yeah, skimmed it. It makes you wonder whether problems among black groups are going to be more prevalent (as they are becoming here with drunkenness and assault) because of people like Jackson and Sharpton stirring the pot.

We don't have fraternities or sororities here. There are student communities, and they do have initiation rituals, but, no gender differentiation there. Most students don't sign up to those student communities.
Student houses are almost always mixed too. Having people renting rooms only to women or men is seen as pretty backwards by most.

You guys don't have "saftey schools" in the UK, then?

Nope.

What are they?

This is what they are:
http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1812947

Aside from not having a map of the college campus which points out where the "rape path," the "rape trail," and "that patch of road next to the woods where several student have gotten raped" in it, it pretty much describes the college I went to, to a T.  (And yes, pretty much any student who went to my school could prolly point out all three locations for you- only issue would be potential disagreement between which was the "rape path" versus "rape trail.")

There's a reaosn I'm bitter about much to do with my college.  There's also a reason I'm bitter about my shitty pre-college experiences.  I think I'm probably smart enough that if my mother hadn't spent my entire childhood literally driving my crazy and had instead settled down someplace nice where I was able to consistently attend a decent school system with textbooks that didn't say that plate techtonic theory was just the devil testing our faith through the evils of science (and stayed in ANY school more than a year or two in a goddamn row), I might've actually been able to flourish and go to a decent school, maybe on some kind of scholarship.  As it was I only applied to one school because I was so overwhelmed by the process and hopped right into it at seventeen, fresh out of drop-out school.

On the plus side, I make absolute shit for pay right now and probably would at this point in my career (in my particular field, anyway) even if I'd gone to a decent college, and the school I went to was dirt cheap relative to other schools offering comparable degree programs- at least on paper.  As far as how much I learned I think I got what I paid for (and frankly I think I still got ripped off), but most of the important things I've learned weren't in classrooms anyway, and I'm damn glad I'm not even more in debt than I amright now.

I think fraternities and sororities are absolutely moronic. I thought people went to college to get smarter, not dumber. :wanker:

 :agreed:

Actually, for me, living in the dorm was even more enabling of my immaturity than living at home would have been. I had WAY more freedom on campus
than I ever had at home, doing laundry was easy, and there was plenty of good food in the cafeteria and snack bar. I skipped a lot of classes, took naps,
quit going to Mass, and spent many hours socializing for the first time in my life, all while doing just what I had to do to pass my classes
(well, most of them.  :duh:  ) It was a great, mostly  fun four years of delaying reality. I'd do it again if I could find someone willing to pay for it!
