Don't eat them much, but I like the onion flavoured ones. Prefer doritos, or Walkers crisps. Taito are good, but I'm not sure you get them outside Ireland.

How many of the Brits here had beans-on-toast for at least one meal today? :zoinks:
-
Every time I go over and see Emma, I get myself a parmo. Basically parmesan cheese on top of breaded chicken. Can get all sorts of variations (chilli parmos etc.) but I like it plain.
Looks like puke and considered chav food, but it's considered luxury to me. If they sold them in Ireland i'd be 22 stone by now. So gorgeous. :autism:

I've been tempted to try serving beans on toast for dinner, but keep thinking it won't go over too well. Will admit that if I do it with the 19 cents a can pork and beans it should be a real budget booster.

For those who might care to try, here are some posts from Chowhound, I think.
1) Having an English mom who can't cook, I grew up on beans on toast. I still have it a few times a year. This is pretty amazing since I am a spice and chile pepper addict and into big bold flavors, while this is a mild dish. Somehow the flavors work quite well.
In the US the beans are the ones labeled Heinz Vegetarian beans. To make the dish properly you need to add a fat pat of butter to the beans while heating and you need to use decent regular white bread, toasted and heavily buttered. Butter is the key to this dish. For easy eating that doesn't require a knife I cut the buttered toast up into 1"x1" squares before pouring on the beans. Another improvement is adding 1-2 ounces of water to the beans before heating. This increases the "gravy" so the meal isn't dry.
2) yes, after spending a bit of time in england, i got hooked on this dish and recreated it when i got back. the heinz vegetarian beans are the best. you can find them in major supermarkets. have a complete traditional british breakfast and serve your beans on toast with grilled (basically fried in olive oil or butter) tomatoes and sautéed mushrooms. sooo good.
3) This may be a simple dish but it can be very comforting. Pile the beans on a couple of slices of thickly buttered toast. Brown HP sauce is my preferred accompaniment. You can probably buy that in the same shop as the beans. You can make the dish more substantial by topping with a fried egg or some grated cheddar.

:autism:
Actually it's white béchamel sauce and cheese that it's covered in. :M
Also, since when were you not 22 stone? :orly:

Baked beans make me think of this:

See you lot have labelled us all with that baked beans brush!
I hate beans on toast.
Best chav food is eggy-bread!

Ah, thank you.
I know that in a sweet version, Wentelteefjes. Bread dipped in egg with some milk and cinnamon. Then fried and served with castor sugar.
-
I've been wanting to make what I would have called "Savory French Bread" to go with dinner sometime. I figured some cuisine or another had already created it. Nice to know it's called eggy bread. I can just taste it with some garlic, onion, parsley, under a hamburger patty. I'll invite everyone over when I make it.
-
Ive always known it as French toast. Its one of the few meals I can cook.

I think I could make it, though I haven't yet. Eggs, milk, cinnamon, dip bread, fry, add butter and maple syrup!
-
Its really easy to make. I just empty 2 eggs into a bowl, heat up the frying pan, soak 2 slices of bread in the eggs, fry in the frying pan with some oil. Once one side of the bread is nice and crispy, flip it over and crisp up the other side. Add sslt and pepper.
Never tried it with milk, maple syrup, and cinnamon.

When we make the batter at the retirement home, we whip the eggs smooth and add milk and cinnamon
to make a rich liquid for dipping. Butter and syrup make lovely toppings!

I do batter the eggs, but I think syrup is a largely American thing. I often hear them tslking about syrup in meals. Ive never seen a british person use it in anything other than cakes and desserts.
Ido love maple syrup and pecan nut pastries though :)

The 100% real maple syrup is a must! I used to use maple-flavored stuff but the real thing is worth the money!

What is "eggy-bread"?
Bread dipped in egg and then fried.
We call that French Toast
-
It lurks under many names
don't know if it has a connection with Ireland but my
old neighbour (Dubliner) always called it
GYPSY TOAST
i bet those pesky french stole it, lol.
I have never put cinnoman in. Yes milk. Its great for feeding us working class folks - especially if
you have many mouths to feed - the more mouths the more milk you put in!

If it was stolen, isn't it more likely the Gypsy's were the culprits?
-
You could be onto something there...
if you think about how it was smuggled between France
and Ireland...what have you got inbetween? - England
of course. You don't think either the french or the irish
could have taken all that bread right under our noses..
...the plot gets thicker though...think who are the royal
family in England - bloody Germans!

And with lots of milk, and hardly any eggs at home, adding a bit of custard-powder, or other starch, can work miracles.

This was in the Telegraph this morning. If you're interested in any I imagine most of the recipes are somewhere on the Web.
The following cakes are all solid British fare - but which one is your favourite?
Welsh Cake - Cooked on a bakestone, these traditional Welsh snacks are made from flour, sultanas, raisins and currants with a touch of spice such as cinnamon and nutmeg.
French Fancy (also Fondant Fancy) - A British variety of iced sponge cake topped with a hemisphere of buttercream and fondant icing. Originally produced in the UK by the Mr Kipling company and often found on the table at a children’s party.
Fat Rascal - A rough domed-shaped type of cake, similar to a scone, made with currants and candied peel and traditional in Yorkshire, especially in the famous Betty's tearooms.
Victoria Songe - Named after Queen Victoria who favoured a slice of sponge cake with her afternoon tea. A traditional Victoria sponge is filled with softly whipped cream and jam and dredged with caster sugar.
Lemon Drizzle - A classic sponge cake made in many parts of England for Easter Sunday.
Bakewell Tart - My Kipling put icing and a cherry on top of the shortcrust pastry treat, but the Bakewell pudding (a puff pastry and almond paste delicacy) is thought to been made as a mistake by the cook of Derbyshire landlady Mrs Greaves who misunderstood her instructions.
Battenburg - The distinctive check-patterned marzipan-covered cake is alternately coloured pink and yellow. The cake was created in honour of the marriage in 1884 of Queen Victoria's granddaughter to Prince Louis of Battenberg, with the four squares representing the four Battenberg princes: Louis, Alexander, Henry and Francis Joseph.
Eccles Cake - A small, round cake filled with currants and made from flaky pastry with butter and can sometimes be topped with demerara sugar named after the English town of Eccles in Manchester.
Jaffa Cake - It is highly debated whether the orange-flavoured snack is a cake or a biscuit, but in a court case Scottish company McVities argued that the distinction between cakes and biscuits is, among other things, that biscuits would normally be expected to go soft when stale, whereas cakes would normally be expected to go hard. It was proved that Jaffa Cakes become hard when stale.
Chelsea Bun - First created in the 18th century at the Bun House in London’s Chelsea district. The bun is made of a rich dough flavoured with lemon and cinnamon and rolled into a square spiral shape.

Ilike French Fancys a lot. Very sweet, so I could only eat one or two at a time. Lovely though.
Jaffa Cakes are great as well. I see them as biscuits though. They come in a packet like many biscuits. They are not like cakes.
If you dont get them in America, then its a shame. I think they would do well.
