Could have been any group, taking it.
Could very well have been a group of kids with too much to drink, doing it for the LULZ.
Could be a fundamentalist group, religious fundamentalist, or political fundamentalist.
Could be a collector. Could be...

Can't blame Auschwitz for not having guarded that heavily. Who would expect someone stealing that?

Hope it will turn up undamaged soon.

Knowing Poland, I don't have much hope for this turning up undamaged any time soon.

Arbeit macht (das Zeichen) Frei für diejenigen, die es zu stehlen

Seriously though, I hope they get it back, as well as the people responsible for doing it. --I would not be surprised if the ones responsible for taking the sign were part of the European or Polish Far Right/ Neo Nazis.

^My mum said they probably were.  We have a surprisingly bad problem with skinheads over there.  One such organisation even had our former Minister of Education as the head of it  ::)

Could just end up on a scrap heap you mean, in pieces?

Doubt that, otherwise the people who did it would have just left it vandalised there to make a point :P  I don't think there's much of a chance of getting it back really.

They found it in northern Poland, cut into three pieces (one with each of the words). Looks like they have some people in custody.

Weird, I wonder if we'll ever get to hear a reason for the cutting up.

Could of course simply have been a matter of logistics, and planning to weld it together later.

It's been found in three pieces, and apparently it was done by common criminals who were in it just for the money.

Read it here. (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=121712745)

I wonder how the thieves hoped to sell it, given how famous it is?

For real. Something like that is so high profile, you have no hope of unloading it. If they were to try to sell it, they would either be accused of making a copy, or have the authorities called pretty quickly.

 :indeed:

A dumb crime if done for money. It was funneh just for the lulz.

It's a symbol, nothing more, nothing less.

I remember seeing the one at Dahcau, but I if I remember correctly it was part of the gate and not a separate sign.

People who collect will buy anything just to have it.  Just look at all the art that has been stolen that nobody can brag about having but they do

They should just nuke the site. Couldn't give a shite about the holocaust, I'd rather worry about the present.
